Australia draft Rugby league stalwart after assistant coach quits ahead of World Cup

Jason Ryles has come in at short notice to replace Brad Davis.

EDDIE JONES’ WALLABIES were dealt a setback on the eve of the World Cup Friday with attack coach Brad Davis quitting and rugby league stalwart Jason Ryles drafted in at short notice.

Davis was recruited in May from English Premiership side London Irish, and has returned to Britain for family reasons.

They have a quality replacement in Ryles, who worked with Jones when he was England boss and is considered one of the hottest young coaches in rugby league.

“Jason is the most sought-after coach in the NRL,” said Jones, who needs all the help he can get with Australia losing four consecutive Tests since he took over.

“He will add immensely to our coaching staff and help prepare the players to win the Rugby World Cup. We are thrilled to have him join the team.”

Ryles played 271 games in the National Rugby League before turning to coaching with Melbourne Storm and Sydney Roosters.

Australia, who left for France on Thursday, open their World Cup campaign against Georgia in Paris on 9 September before facing Fiji, Wales and Portugal in Pool C.

@Fagin Strauss: Fiji are on a bit of a role lately and possibly could do Wales or even Australia.. What odds Wales lose two games but still go through, then beat a terrible England team, the opposition in semi final get early red card and suddenly they’re in the final. Wouldn’t that be the most Garland thing ever!!!

Anyone hear an alternative reason for the assistant coach quitting other than the one that was given? Nothing would surprise me with Eddie.

@Sam Bingham: it’s gonna be the same reason all his England staff left him over the years. He’s a absolute nightmare to work under and expects you to be on call 24/7.
