Australia draft Rugby league stalwart after assistant coach quits ahead of World Cup

Jason Ryles has come in at short notice to replace Brad Davis.

EDDIE JONESโ€™ WALLABIES were dealt a setback on the eve of the World Cup Friday with attack coach Brad Davis quitting and rugby league stalwart Jason Ryles drafted in at short notice.

Davis was recruited in May from English Premiership side London Irish, and has returned to Britain for family reasons.

They have a quality replacement in Ryles, who worked with Jones when he was England boss and is considered one of the hottest young coaches in rugby league.

โ€œJason is the most sought-after coach in the NRL,โ€ said Jones, who needs all the help he can get with Australia losing four consecutive Tests since he took over.

โ€œHe will add immensely to our coaching staff and help prepare the players to win the Rugby World Cup. We are thrilled to have him join the team.โ€

Ryles played 271 games in the National Rugby League before turning to coaching with Melbourne Storm and Sydney Roosters.

Australia, who left for France on Thursday, open their World Cup campaign against Georgia in Paris on 9 September before facing Fiji, Wales and Portugal in Pool C.

Looks like Ireland will be chasing a big total. Zimbabwe currently 79-3 after just 9 overs.
