Ballyboden and St Vincent's advance to Dublin football semi-finals

Meanwhile in Clare, Ballyea won their senior hurling quarter-final.

Dublin

The semi-final draw for this year’s Dublin senior football championship will see Ballyboden St Enda’s face St Vincent’s while St Judes will take on Ballymun Kickhams.

Ballyboden St Enda’s booked their place in the semi-finals with a 2-13 to 1-11 win over St Brigid’s today in Parnell Park.

Ballyboden St Enda’s, managed by Down All-Ireland winner Conor Deegan, continued their fine form after getting the better of Kilmacud Crokes in the previous round.

The winners trailed by 1-6 to 0-7 at half-time with St Brigid’s goalkeeper Shane Supple having netted a penalty.

But Ballyboden St Enda’s bounced back in the second-half with goals from Darren O’Reilly and Ryan Basquel helping them claim a five-point victory.

In the second match at the venue, St Vincent’s were narrow winners by 0-14 to 2-7 against St Sylvester’s. St Vincent’s lead by 0-9 to 0-4 at the interval with Ciaran Dorney and Tomas Quinn both excelling in the scoring stakes.

Eamonn Fennell went off injured early in the first-half for St Vincent’s and in the second-half St Sylvester’s bounced back. Michael McCarthy crashed a shot against the bar before Mark Brennan hit the net for them to leave them 0-10 to 1-5 adrift.

A goal from Cavan senior Eugene Keating for St Sylvester’s cut the gap to 0-13 to 2-5 but St Vincent’s clung on for a one-point win.

Ballyboden and St Vincent’s join last night’s quarter-final winners St Judes and Ballymun Kickhams in the last four.

Clare

Ballyea became the first side to reach the semi-finals of the Clare senior hurling championship with a 1-20 to 2-14 quarter-final win today over 2010 and 2011 champions Crusheen in Cusack Park in Ennis.

Ballyea lead by 1-12 to 2-8 at the break with Fergus Kennedy scoring two goals for Crusheen but Fergal O’Reilly raised a green flag for Ballyea. While Tony Kelly’s scoring in the second-half inspired Ballyea to ultimately claim success.

Ladies Football

Clare outfit Banner won the Munster senior ladies football title with a final win over Cork side St Val’s by 1-13 to 1-12 in Kilmallock this afternoon.

St Judes and Ballymun Kickhams progress to last four in Dublin SFC

He made a great career for himself. Nobody wanted him when he was running rings around full backs at Shels. Livingston? Jesus. He was unlucky that the first half of his career coincided with a period when everyone thought power and pace were the 2 attributes needed for quality midfield players. It took Iniesta and Xavi to turn that theory on its head and Wes was finally appreciated. Probably had the best ball control of any Irish player since Brady. I hope he gets a few more years with Norwich.

He was a footballer. That’s what distinguished him. The wheat from the chaff.
He certainly had his limitations , he was never world class, but he was brave enough to put his foot on the ball, look up and pick a forward pass. Imaging if every Irish player was capable of that.
I would pay in to watch Wes and that’s the difference.

And just for the record, my favourite was this one from almost 5 years ago.A frendly vs. Poland but tell that to the defender after Wes chests it down lets it bounce and with the outside of the left curls it across the keeper.
