Ciarán Gallagher reports from Dusseldorf
TYSON FURY SERENADED a 55,000-capacity crowd with a rendition of Aerosmith’s ‘I Don’t Want to Miss A Thing’ at Dusselforf’s Esprit Arena, which he dedicated to his wife Paris, after claiming the heavyweight championship of the world.
Fury, 27 and now undefeated in 25 fights, took a unanimous points win over 39-year-old Wladimir Klitschko (64-4) as the Manchester native, a former Irish heavyweight champion, produced a disciplined display which was completely at odds with his brazed and vocal pre-fight approach.
Fury, who has sometimes boxed as a switch-hitter in previous fights, boxed orthodox in the first round and appeared to have the better of the opening, boxing in a conservative yet effective style and utilising his jab.
The challenger continued to fight in a sensible fashion in the second round, but his posing and confident attitude in the third saw him throw less shots as Klitschko attempted to work an opening with Fury boxing southpaw during that round.
Both continued to fight in a tentative fashion throughout the opening half of the bout and few shots were thrown during the sixth, with Klitschko’s cool and clam approach gradually starting to pay dividends.
Despite the pre-fight bluster and trash talk, which mostly came from Fury, the fight was a relatively disciplined affair with referee Tony Weeks not having to interfere too often.
Klitschko, a Ukrainian born in Kazkhstan who has built his career in Germany, raised a cheer from the ‘home’ support in the ninth round as he showed real intent for the first time in attack but Fury battled back and threw some combinations in reply towards the end of the round.
The champion looked short on ideas in the 10th and 11th rounds with Fury throwing hooks in the latter round, which he was in control of but the challenger suffered a point deduction as Weeks disciplined him for a rabbit punch to the back of Klitschko’s head.
The shackles finally came off in the 12th and final round as both fighters traded, with Klitschko clearly marked up under his left eye.
The challenger took the three titles on offer, with two judges calling it 115-112 and the remaining official scoring it 116-111. This reporter scored the fight 116-112.
Meanwhile, Meath-based Finglas super-featherweight Jono Carroll extended his undefeated record to 9-0 on the undercard of the big Dusseldorf show, defeating Miguel Gonzalez of Honduras on points.
Carroll looked comfortable boxing over 10 rounds for the first time as he recorded his third win of the year.
There won’t be a lead roof touched for a fortnight.
Finbarr Furey would have thrown more punches
Jaysus
My big fat gypsy world champion.
Heavy weight championship isn’t worth shit anymore. Not one of them would survive a round with Ali, Frazier or Foreman.
easy say that but Frazier was 6ft, so about 9 inches shorter than fury, he would find it hard to get inside. And either would train to fight a smaller guy and tie him up.. Heavyweight boxing is boring these days. Joshua will be champion in about 1.5-2 years and will hold it for good few years as rest are dirt
Destroyer – Tyson was last champ worth anything.
@Henry, Mike was great until he fought someone that could figure him out, aka Lennox etc.. Lennox was last champ worth anything.
Joshua could well be stopped in his overly hyped tracks when he meets his 1st ring worthy opponent in Dillion Whyte next month, whom has stuck him out once already in their amateur days! Fury schooled that flat track ‘jab n grab’ bully earlier and at 27 will only get better if not wiser!
He could be stopped in his tracks but I say he will put away Whyte within 7 rounds. He needs to fight some people that can get past 3 rounds with him. Amateur game is long time ago so not really relevant so moot point.. Schooled is a strong word.. he was slightly less boring and thats how he won
Destroyer Tyson fought Lennox after his demons had overtaken him. He never reached his potential. Lennox was no better than a run of the mill champ. Golden age of heavyweights had passed by then.
@Henry.. I agree on tyson and demons to a point. he could have been much better, thats life.. But everyones records looks great at the start, not hard get to 20-0 an have fought noone.. Most of guys mike fought at the start were bums in comparison to him.. Lennox as run of the mill, thats a bit harsh. he was an olympic champion and last undisputed champion. he beat tyson and holyfield and everyone else put in front of him. Stopped vitali too(who knows in fairness with cut what could have been) I think we need to stop looking back and thinking that everyone in the 70s was better, sure some were, but lennox would have held his own against all of them. Just a shame nowadays that the quality isnt coming through..
Did you see that fight? Both were so raw it was unreal, Joshua has improved immensely since, on past form, Whyte has looked sloppy at times, I could be wrong, but the Watford man is rightly a huge favourite. And I’m not one to buy the hype just yet, he’s got a long way to go before we can call him a future great or anything
Well at least White wont be coming off the bus from bumtown like the rest of Joshua’s nopponents up to now even if his last couple of performances were far from impressive! We if schooling Dr GlassHammer was a bit over stated he certainly taught some of his peers how to nullify a glorified jab ‘n’ grab merchant with some decent head and foot movement!
Are you for real Lennox was a joke of a boxer – Tyson lost for a load of other reasons
I follow Joshua on Fb and the stuff he is doing in training is off the charts. Worth a look. I agree tho he needs to put a bit more time in and build up slowly. It bothers me that he signed with Barry Hearne. I agree with Barry Mcguigan on that score. He is slimey and gives me the creeps. I think it’s the first mistake Joshua has made. Now to decide if I am going to bed or waiting up to watch James Regale
De Gale stupid auto correct stupid wine not noticing it
Finbarr Furey would have thrown more punches and sang a dacent tune afterwards
@Destroyer – Lennox would have held his own against Ali, Frazier, Foreman or even Holmes?………..ah c’mon.
Lewis got a boxing lesson off Vitali, but for a cut that would have been the end of him. And VK took that fight on 2 weeks notice
Lot of sense outta Destroyer tonight, AJ came to boxing late, his am fights can’t be given near as much credence. AJ to take whyte in 6
Iron Mike had an upper cut that could behead an opponent… Last great of the heavyweight division,, loved him.
Tyson was a bully , he fought nobody’s ‘Lennox and Evander were never afraid of him. Tyson was hype and not such a great boxer but a bully. The bulky eventually got his match
Another sad day for heavyweight boxing.
Could not agree more. Tyson was a beats but undisciplined.
When Lennox fought Tyson he was no where near his best. He wouldn’t have last two rounds against a 20/21 year old Tyson
Tyson Fury…sounds like an action figure.
@Henry yes I think he would have. Frazier was a small man, look what foreman did to him in only a couple of rounds.. Look at riddick bowe, he avoided Lennox cause he was afraid of him, he had 3 great fights with holyfield but wanted none of . Im not a Lennox fan by the way, I just think he deserves the credit. Vitali had the beatings of him bur for the cut, but as Lennox puts it, he was in there to win and he won..
Lewis was 58-56 behind on all judges score cards and doctor called the fight due to cut. Only reason lewis won was because punch caused the cut. He wasn’t man enough to grant him a rematch. In fairness to both vitali and wlad they never ducked any one
U are forgetting tyson
klitchko was rubbish..out boxed
I guess after 19 years as a Professional, age has finally caught up with him. Time to pack it in. Nearing 40 now.
true. i think he still has a fight planned for next year..might have to have a rethink. fury did well though i thought all his sh/t talk got to klitchko. fury bullied him and made him flinch alot during the fight.
I thought he just signed a 5 fight deal with German TV
Congratulations to Tyson from Ukraine. Wladimir only had to blame himself. Since Manny Stuart died Wladimir skills dropped. Whenever Vitaliy was fighting I always was 100% sure but Wladimir always was loosing control and “freezing” mentally and physically when he was getting in some kind of trouble and could not dictate his dominance in the ring. Johnatan Banks is not the best coach as well and it looked like Vitaliy Klitchko thinks this way as well. From round 6 Vitaliy probably saw Wladimir loosing and started to give him instructions in Russian and it was completely different to what J. Banks was telling. He asked him to move and be more active and just box because he will lose, exactly what he did in Round 12 and completely outclassed Fury, wheres Johnatan was talking about some combinations etc.
Jeez, I think you’d see more punches thrown in Supermacs on a Saturday night! Fair fecks though, Furey got his tactics spot on.
Amazing performance…. well done Tyson! !!!!
He’d be some man in the second row! Sign him up!!
Feck me…didn’t see that coming. Chaps a looper but fair play to him
Fair play to Fury watched the fight and Fury didn’t land many punches but Klitschko didn’t punch at all until the 12th round. And you wont win a boxing match if you don’t punch.
Unless you’re Homer Simpson
Or Floyd Mayweather
@Linda, not a floyd fan, but that’s a ignorant comment and shows ur lack of knowledge on boxing.
Mayweather was a counter puncher..and one of the greatest ever at it. Might not have been too exciting but always delivered a win
Jesus Christ destroyer, twas an obvious joke.
What a terrible boring fight.
Did you at least think it was intriguing? It was tight, tense, not every fight is going to be an absolute war, it’s not bare-knuckle fighting (though I’m sure Fury would like that with his ancestry!), there’s tactics in there too, I really enjoyed watching it unfold
A shocking fight, at least no controversy with the decision
Sad thing is all so called “big” boxing fights are becoming more and more boring and shocking.. The sport is nowhere near what it used utility be. Gone be the Tyson, Ali, Forman, days..
I’m sorry you didn’t enjoy that, it was intriguing, I was on the edge of my seat all fight, boxing is about more than just being aggressive, it’s about being smart too, and Fury carried out his gameplan to perfection, if you can’t at least appreciate that, then you shouldn’t watch boxing.
@Jack.. Seriously you were on edge of your seat.. wow you are easily amused so.. I am an avid boxing and fight fan and that was utter utter tripe.. Wlad just wouldnt engage so whats the point.. Hug and jab for 12 rounds.. Yes more than being agressive, but its what we want to see. Gameplans all well and good, but Fury didnt do much either, so what his game plan was to wander around ring for 36 minutes and throw a few punches as well. Look he won and good luck to him, he will get a few fights out of it and be knocked out by AJ in about 2 years i say(if not earlier)
Jack i appreciate the tactics but cmon like??
Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee,the skill grace and beauty on show was unbearable at times…or was it two drunks outside the chipper?
Sting like a butterfly, float like a bee.
You mean float like a walrus and sting like a goal fish.
YESSS!! well deserved. haha hope he sings now.
hahahahaha and there he is, singing. class.
Some headcase that man! Still fair play to him!
Goes to show the state of heavy weight boxing …..
It will never be what it was
Surprised the judges didn’t rob Fury they got the scores spot on. What a pathetic performance from Klitschko hes been the chief benefactor of a very poor era in the heavyweight division its criminal that he broke joe louis record. Not Furys biggest fan but he won easily so fair play to him and he got his tactics spot on.
Well said!!
Fury deservedly won but Klitschko was shocking in a fairly poor fight.
Iron Mike in his heyday would knock the two of them out in the first minute of the first – on the same day.
Even Joshua or Wilder would knock him out now I think he should retire now because he has nothing else to achieve and I don’t see him regaining his titles.
He’s a better singer than boxer!!!
What a crap boxing match.. With the way many pac man and Mayweather fought, now this “high profile” fight.. It’s sage to say boxing is on a downward spiral! UFC is the future
Don’t mention UFC here, it too violent for them
For all the casual fans on here who said Fury was a JOKE can I just say that you NOTHING about boxing, I backed him on here and got tumbed down.
Fair play to Fury, won in Germany in spite of the ridiculous point deduction
And the fact I’m getting down thumbed on this comment proves my real life assertion of people are weak
The majority of people not all btw
You’re drunk Cathal
I love the way that I’m getting down thumbed but nobody is replying to me stating what is wrong with what I’m saying weak, weak, weak
Yes I agree I am
To joe bloggs of course
Maybe it’s just your poor grammar
You should ring Joe Duffy, Cathal.
Cathal in fairness, you got lucky. Anybody that follows boxing would have had fury to lose. He has beaten nobody of note before tonight. Going against a lad undeafeted for 10 years anybody who predicted this was chancing their arm.
Don’t like pessimistic lad
Styles make fights
@Cathal, you picked the winner, what do you want a medal?? Good man, did you put a bet on and actually get money out of it, if not big deal..
Fury is a joke, what would lennox lewis do to him.. Wlad I was shocked as how little he threw, father time has caught up with him very quick, sad to see it happen. Hang them up and retire with your hot missus. Fury will be beaten in a few fights and I for one will be glad.
You are not getting ref thumbed because people think you are wrong but because you seem like a bit of an arse.
Just stop.
Not a patch on rocky on rte
€20 at 4/1, get in but it was like watching too ostriches fighting :) haha
Fury is one crazy guy !!
If that’s what passes for boxing these days then God help us. A joke of a “fight”.
Awful fight but well done Fury
I miss following watchable heavy weight boxing :( I enjoyed tonight but smaller fighters who made the grade in the past really thrilled me. Mike Tyson brought this weight class to serious heights that, in my opinion have not been surpassed.
Mike tyson went out each and every time to knock out his opponent as soon as possible, Klitcsho was different he went to out box opponents. I think a character like Fury can bring the Iron Mike attitude back into it.
@phil, you seriously believe that. I have watched this and his fight against chisora(a much shorter man) and he just jabbed and didnt engage most of the fight. He hasnt the aggression or skill to fight like Iron Mike.. He will get a few soft defenses and thats it.
He’s Irish !!!! Isn’t he
He is now.
No
He has declared for both Ireland and the U.K. In the past.
Has traveller heritage from both Belfast and Galway.
Couldn’t prove Irish roots to box for Ireland at the the olympics
If he could prove his roots and fought for Ireland how the bandwagon would be different. In fairness he gave a shout out to Irish fans tonight. I can see a title defence in Croke Park.
Brits can keep him boss.
So bad I wanted Rod Stewart to come back for another song.
Boxing is a joke compared to UFC.
You obviously aren’t basing that comment beyond the last 5 yrs of pro boxing.
Maybe 10
Fury is one crazy fool but he deserved that. However just shows how poor heavy weight boxing has become. Klitchko didn’t turn up.
Dr.Softhammer
GlassHammer…..dodgy wraps and bouncy ring!
All of you commenting here criticising the fight, what was Fury supposed to do, he had his gameplan, he carried it out tremendously well, I really enjoyed it, had me even more nervous than the Watford game earlier in that final round. Boxing is more than mindlessly throwing 500 punches a minute, you have to have a strategy too, if you can’t appreciate that, why are you watching, you casuals!
@Jack, I replied to you earlier.. not everyone is a casual. I have watched boxing for over 20 years. I used to box as a kid, and did martial arts for years.. He could have engaged.. Why not knock out Wlad, wlad was doing nothing, why not go in and try knock him out.. Boxing needs to stop with the knicking rounds attitude and surviving till the end and getting a decision. Look at pac vs mayweather, exact same problem, mayweather doesnt engage, he is an incredibly skillful fighter that noone can beat, but yet he is happy just dodging and not knocking people out anymore.. Im just glad I didn’t pay to watch that.. Heavyweight boxing is dead at moment and will be for many years.
Joshua is the future. Like I have been watching for over 20 years and the Heavyweight division is in dire need of fresh blood. In my mind Joshua is the future but there is no opponent good enough out there. Fury looks floppy compared to a tight toned Joshua
Shame he’s a horrible homophobic bigot, shows how far boxing has fallen especially in the heavyweight division to have this clown as champion. Would have been fighting outside of town halls in the 90′s
I’m sure he will apologise for not meeting your standards
Well done Tyson, fantastic result, backed up a great interview last week. Great result considering the lack of resources he had as a fighter. I’m delighted for him.
Wow what a performance.
Klitchko out though and out fought. Joshua and Wilder fights have got to be made in 2016. Should be a good year for boxing..
Well done Tyson
Bruce Willis should never have clicked that button At least all our ears would have been spared that .
Far from a classic. But well done fury well deserved, a very poor Klitschko.
Fury looked like he was fighting in the street and could barely stand up in the last round he was so wrecked after all his playacting.Poor quality fight but bizarrely entertaining.Give me UFC any day though.
More thumps thrown outside my local chippie tonight..it was more of a bear hugging match…
Tell me that wasn’t rigged and fury “an average fighter at best” spending the majority of the fight with his hands by his side or behind his back. Will ye lave it so, and they wonder why ufc grows
The fight was scrappy. Fury deserves the win but Vlad needs to slip away. Joshua will be the heavyweight to beat in the next 12 months. Tonight was a very poor fight by a nobody and a has been.
Yyaaaawwwwnnnnn !!!
Last 4 rounds very entertaining
Fair play to him I didn’t think he’d do it , proved a lot of people wrong
Cursagodonit
Put on 491 he is singing
Enjoyed the daft stuff tyson did over the last few months no harm to see him win
Really dislike fury but deserved to win, Vladimir was a joke and showed to much fear, fury had his number from second round
Tyson is now a world champion, what a joke of a “sport”. RIP boxing.
Absolutely – it’s become irrelevant at this stage
Stay away from d fury after party Ciaran, after your escapade at d ny karaoke bars for d macklin Martinez fight you would bring a lot of heat on d fury crew!!! Great reporting and delighted to c fury win!!!
Heavyweight boxing reaches an All Time low !!
Most boring fight I ever watched
No losers in that €€$$
That was pathetic..you’d see more punches landed in 10 mins outside Supermacs on a Saturday night
Boxing is dead bring on the ufc
Useless excuse of a fight… What a shit sport this has turned into. Heavy weight should be max 15ftone. There nor boxing just jaasss for points scoring and hugging!
