All Ireland SHC Round 1 Qualifier
Waterford 1-35
Offaly 0-14
Tomรกs McCarthy reports from Bord Na Mona OโConnor Park
WATERFORD MAINTAINED THEIR 100% championship record against Offaly with a facile victory at a misty Tullamore this afternoon.
After a shaky start, the favourites sprinted clear in the latter part of the first half to get their Liam McCarthy aspirations back on course. 13 players chipped in for Derek McGrathโs men. Pauric Mahony led the rout on 11 points, while hurler of the year Austin Gleeson hit six from play. The only concern for the Dรฉise ahead of next Saturdayโs second round was an ankle injury suffered by captain Kevin Moran.
Wind assisted Waterford shot 1-13 in the second quarter to lead by 13 at the break. Offaly wing forwards Emmett Nolan and Paddy Murphy acted as sweepers initially. James Dempsey picked out his targets from short puckouts. Five Shane Dooley frees left it six points all after 21 minutes. The sides were level on five occasions by that juncture.
The away team came to terms with the Faithful system and eight unanswered points put them in a commanding position. Mahony was responsible for three and finished the half on six. Gleeson started at centre forward and struck three first-half efforts.
Two minutes before the interval, Shane Bennett latched onto a long Stephen OโKeeffe puckout and sent it low past Dempsey (1-14 to 0-7). Darragh Fives marked his return with a point as nine Dรฉise players got on the scoresheet.
Dooley retired with a thumb injury at half-time. Waterford emptied the bench throughout the second period as Jake Dillon, Colin Dunford, Patrick Curran and Thomas Ryan all raised white flags. Skipper Moran came off the field 18 minutes from the end.
The winners completed the 70 with 1-24 from play as they put their name in the hat on Monday morning. A stunning James Dempsey save thwarted Gleeson in added time.

My comment deleted ( They had The Waterford players name wrong in the main caption) because I pointed out your mistake! Stay classy!
@Sean OโShea: Thanks for pointing it out again even though theyโve corrected it now Sean. Iโll sleep a little easier tonight now thank God
@Johnny: god, you are an Ape! The point I was making was rather than correct it and accept the mistake they also removed my comment pointing it outโฆ Why who knows but you continue being a tool anyway
@Johnny: And no they didnโt correct it either they just took down both players named rather than correcting it, so Yes, wrong again !
@Sean OโShea: Jeeeesus relax Bud, bitta banter is all it is. And to be fair, Weโre all Apes, we descended from them. Anyway, hope you manage to get your nickers out of that twist before the night is out. God Bless.
Offaly were terrible. Looked like they came up with game plan in the dressing room before the game. All the backs were 5yards behind their men. Forwards or should I say forward (they only played with one man inside 60mtrs in the 1st half) didnt work hard enough. Worrying times. Only for Dempsey in goal it could have been a cricket score
@Damian Fox: I think it WAS a cricket score Damian. A 24 point margin is pretty damning. Like the article said, a facile victory. Offaly have fallen a long way since appearing in 4 finals in 7 years from 1994 to 2000.
Two Tier badly needed in both codes, how hard is that to understand
@Eric Djemba-Djemba: thereโs 4 tiers in Hurlingโฆ.
@COYBIG: a proper two tier system, not just the Christy ring cup and the likes that nobody gives a shit about
@Eric Djemba-Djemba: I agree in some ways but with that system how will those teams ever catch up??i think with that system itโs just accepting the teams we have at the top?
Two bad sides
@42 major trophies: Waterford are hardly a poor side.
@Patrick OโSullivan: no big under achievers famine wonโt be ending anytime soon over hyped by media same as limerick
@42 major trophies: What would you know about it you fool? Bad sides usually score 1-35 do they?? Comment under your real name or donโt bother #Clown
Haha, I know, Sorry lad, a bit worked up today, the poor 42 getting the brunt of itโฆ. Knickers sorted anyway โฆ have a good one chief
