Usain Bolt to learn Rio injury fate this week after missing Olympic trials

Athletics’ biggest star hopes to race on 22 July to earn inclusion in the Jamaica squad.

Updated at 22.05pm

INJURED USAIN BOLT will learn on Thursday if he will have his chance to run for a third consecutive Olympic gold medal in the 100 meters, 200m and 4×100 relay.

A Jamaican Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA) committee will meet on Thursday to consider Bolt’s medical exemption request to be allowed to run in the 100 and 200 and on the relay — all events he won at the 2008 Beijing and 2012 London Olympics.

Bolt said Friday after pulling out of the 100m final at the Jamaican Olympic Trials that he has suffered a slight hamstring tear, later posting photographs on social media of what appeared to be him receiving treatment on his left hamstring.

Reigning 100 and 200 world champion and world record-holder Bolt filed for the medical exemption that would allow him onto the Jamaican Olympic squad despite not competing in the trials.

Warren Blake, JAAA president, confirmed Saturday that Bolt had requested the exemption for the 100 and 200 after withdrawing.

JAAA rules allow injured athletes ranked in the top three on the IAAF performance list to miss the meet and be placed on the Olympic squad, but it requires the athlete prove fitness in time to be included on the Games list.

Blake and Ludlow Watts, team manager for Jamaica’s athletics team for the Rio Olympics, said the selection committee would meet by Thursday to decide the list of athletes to represent Jamaica at the Rio Olympics.

Both men were hopeful that Bolt would be able to compete at the London Anniversary Games on 22 July, the meet Bolt targeted as one where he needed to run well.

“He will run at the London meet on the 22nd and we hope he will get a good time there,” Blake said.

A grade one tear is classified as the most minor of hamstring injuries. Grade two is typically a partial tear with grade three a complete tear that might require months to heal.

JAAA secretary-general Garth Gayle warned Friday that unless Bolt showed up for his 200m heat at the trials on Saturday he could lose that place on the Olympic team. But Gayle added: “Bolt has very smart people in his camp and they will know what to do.”

Bolt is like the only guy out of the top 20 fastest times ever to never get caught doping. He’s not a unique snowflake. He’s doped to the gills just as much as Gatlin or anyone else. It’d be naive to think otherwise. Athletics is as corrupt as Cycling.

Lance Armstrong was “one of the most tested athletes ever”. He never ” officially” tested positive. Doesn’t mean he wasn’t using PEDs.

The horrible question around Bolt is his junior record. If he is doping now, when did he start? Very sinister

I subscribe to Tommy Tiernans vision….let them take whatever drugs they want. Who doesn’t want to see a man run 100 metres in 4 seconds??

Ah who cares – the lines are so blurred these days it’s hard to know the difference between just about clean & doping. I’m presuming the ” clean ” athletes are the ones on right side of legal – just. The man is box office – let’s hope and pray for this legend ..
