Rory McIlroy two shots off leader Fowler at halfway point of US Open

Padraig Harrington is two over after shooting a second round 69.

LAST UPDATE | 17 Jun 2023

RORY MCILROY VOWED he would never give up seeking more major titles after a flying finish left him just two shots off the halfway lead in the 123rd US Open.

McIlroy covered his last nine holes in five under par to card a second round of 67 at Los Angeles Country Club, where Rickie Fowler set the pace after a rollercoaster 68.

Fowler, whose opening 62 equalled the lowest score in any menโ€™s major, made eight birdies, six bogeys and just four pars to post a 10-under-par halfway total of 130, equalling the lowest in a US Open set by Martin Kaymer in 2014.

Fowlerโ€™s 18 birdies over the first two days are also the most in championship history and kept the 34-year-old in pole position to claim a first major title.

McIlroy is eight-under for the tournament, while both Padraig Harrington and Shane Lowry made the cut, they are currently on two-over. Harrington carded a round of one-under 69, while Lowry was level par for his second round.

They were both right on the cut  line but Seamus Power missed out after a second successive 72 to finish on four-over.

McIlroy is seeking his fifth and a first since the US PGA Championship in August 2014, a month after he had won the Open at Royal Liverpool with a performance which has inspired this weekโ€™s approach.

โ€œFor whatever reason I went on to YouTube a few weeks ago and was looking back at Hoylake 2014 and I could not believe how many irons and three woods I was hitting off the tee and it set something off in my mind,โ€ McIlroy said.

โ€œYou know how to do this, you know how to play smart. You donโ€™t have to take driver โ€“ yes itโ€™s a big weapon but I feel like I have more weapons in my arsenal than I did then so I may as well use them.โ€

Asked how much he wanted to win another major after a drought of almost nine years, McIlroy added: โ€œI started thinking about winning this thing on Monday and no-one wants me to win another major more than I do.

โ€œThe desire is obviously there. Iโ€™ve been trying and Iโ€™ve come close over the past nine years and I keep coming back.

โ€œI feel like Iโ€™ve showed a lot of resilience in my career, whether I get rewarded or punched in the gut Iโ€™ll always keep coming back.โ€

Fowler had failed to qualify for the last two US Opens as a loss of form saw him tumble to 185th in the world rankings, but came into the week on the back of successive top 10s on the PGA Tour and ranked 45th.

โ€œI sure hope everyone can relate to struggles because everyone deals with them. No oneโ€™s perfect,โ€ the Californian said.

โ€œI think youโ€™d be lying if you havenโ€™t been through a tough time, especially if you play golf.

โ€œIโ€™m looking forward to the weekend. Itโ€™s been a while since Iโ€™ve felt this good in a tournament, let alone a major. Itโ€™s going to be a challenge, but Iโ€™m definitely looking forward to it.โ€

American Wyndham Clark was a shot behind Fowler following a 67, with Xander Schauffele alongside McIlroy on eight under after only managing to add a 70 to his opening 62.

Harris English held outright fifth place on seven under with Dustin Johnson recovering from a quadruple-bogey eight on the second to remain six under, a total matched by Australiaโ€™s Min Woo Lee thanks to a superb 65.

Tournament officials had earlier insisted they would not respond harshly to the record low scores on day one, although the par-three 11th measured 297 yards and water had only been applied to โ€œisolated spots on the greens for turf healthโ€.

John Bodenhamer, chief championships officer of the USGA, told NBC: โ€œ(On Friday), as planned, we will play the golf course longer. We could do things that could make it stupid hard. Weโ€™re not going to do that.โ€

Defending champion Matt Fitzpatrick made a hole-in-one on the 15th as he carded a 70 to lie one over par and make the halfway cut with a shot to spare.

Ainโ€™t gonna happen anytime soon, unless they decide to match him up with Frankie in a number one contenders match and the winner fights him at UFC 200.

But that would really piss Edgar off, which would be hilarious actually.

Aldo isnโ€™t gracious in defeat, on the night or now and heโ€™s still making excuses and threats to the UFC and McGregor. Let him stew.

A guy whoโ€™s undefeated for 10 years and champion as long as he is deserves a rematch. He got caught with one shot and knocked out, it happens in fights. The disrespect he is shown from Irish fans is embarrassing to be honest. If McGregor gets tagged in his first defence at 145 ye would all be screaming for an immediate rematch.

I agree Alan 100%. Iโ€™m delighted for Conor but Jose was a great champion and does deserve his rematch.

As much as thereโ€™s a McGregor bandwagon, theres also a big anti-Mcgregor bandwagon, who will latch onto half truths about his opponentsโ€ฆ Aldo was a champion for 10 years becuase he fought in a weight class with very few other fighters for the first 5 and for the last 5 he barely ever foughtโ€ฆ when was the last time he knocked anyone out? He was massively fussy about who he would fight, always picking fighters who were well below his ability and dodging the hard match ups. If truth be told, Conor was the first striking test he ever really faced in the UFCโ€ฆ He doesnโ€™t deserve an immediate rematch because he has a history of pulling out of fights that didnt suit him.

So Ken Flo, Korean Zombie, Edgar were not hard match ups? Hominick took him to the brink as well. A great champ, and the only champ at 145. If Cain, Anderson etc get an immediate rematch, so should he

UFC spent 18 months promoting Aldo vs McGregor. It would be very hard for them to promote it again for another 6 months after how the last fight finished. Especially as Aldo had no interest in promoting the 1st fight and left Mcgregor to do all the media work. As White said, aldo deserves a rematch after being such a dominant champion but the timing for that rematch wouldnt be right now. Let Mcgregor fight RDA and then he can fight Aldo/Edgar at UFC200 in july, but either way 1 of them aint gonna be happy.

Itโ€™s not surprising to be honest. Dana White is all about the $, he couldnโ€™t give a toss about who deserves a rematch or who is next in line, whatever fight makes the most cash for the ufc ( ie. him and his business partners) is the fight that will be made. Hope mcgregor demands he gets his fair share, he pulls in way more ppv numbers then a lot of boxers but gets paid alot less then some of them.

One mistake in 10 years? Is that not a reason to give him another shot? Even after the first fight when they were waiting on the official announcement Conor himself was man enough to say they could do it again.

I think Dana is right though. Woukd be hard to promote that. Itโ€™s the fight game yes but equally ufc want to make money. The interest for that just isnโ€™t there after last time. Maybe a year down the road might be better for all involved..
