Runaway final success for Leinster over Munster, Ulster beat Connacht to reach third

Ulster overcame Connacht in a third-place playoff at Musgrave Park.

Leinster 33

Two-try centre Leah Tarpey starred as three unanswered second half tries gave Leinster a runaway 33-14 final win over Munster and their first Vodafone Womenโ€™s Interprovincial Championship crown since 2019.

Tarpey touched down either side of half-time in the Musgrave Park decider, before experienced duo Hannah Oโ€™Connor, the captain, and Elise Oโ€™Byrne-White, on her 27th appearance in blue, made it a five-try triumph in the end.

Deirbhile Nic a Bhรกird was at her inspirational best for three-in-a-row hopefuls Munster, darting over for an opening 15th-minute try before helping to set up Chloe Pearseโ€™s effort that had the hosts back in front.

However, Leinster squared things up at 14-all for half-time with a timely Tarpey score which supplemented the penalty try which had seen Munster prop Rรณisรญn Ormond yellow carded.

Having beaten their arch rivals 26-19 in Donnybrook last week to reach the final, Tania Rosserโ€™s charges struck again through Tarpey, the Vodafone player-of-the-match, and fellow Ireland international Dannah Oโ€™Brien began to exert more control from out-half.

Leinster hammered home their dominance in the scrum for Oโ€™Connor to score from the base in the 63rd minute, and replacement Oโ€™Byrne-White finished off a Natasja Behan break to confirm title number seven for her province.

It was only Munsterโ€™s second defeat in 11 Interprovincial matches, but despite the home support, they fell short against a Leinster side that, having being stung by Connacht in the first round, saved their best for last.

Head coach Rosser had given nine debuts in this seasonโ€™s tournament, and only Oโ€™Byrne-White, Sene Taiti-Fanene, Ailsa Hughes, Linda Djougang, Oโ€™Connor and Christy Haney remain from Leinsterโ€™s matchday squad that clinched the 2019 Championship in the most recent Interpro final to take place.

The play-offs were brought back this year to extend the series to four rounds, giving the players more high-level game-time leading into the start of the Energia All-Ireland League and Irelandโ€™s first WXV3 campaign under new head coach Scott Bemand.

Connacht 14

THERE WERE JOYOUS scenes at Musgrave Park as Ulster won their first Vodafone Womenโ€™s Interprovincial Championship match since 2012, beating Connacht 36-14 to finish third overall for this season.

Leading this play-off tie from start to finish, Ulster built a 14-0 interval lead as Rachel McIlroy crossed early on and India Daley added a second try, showing exactly why she has been called up to train with the national squad.

Despite Taryn Schutzler picking up a yellow card, Ella Durkanโ€™s intercept try just after the restart kept Ulster on course. Lily Brady opened Connachtโ€™s account but Cregan responded with a 54th-minute bonus point effort.

Niamh Marleyโ€™s terrific individual try preceded a consolation score from Connacht replacement Orla Dixon, but first-year head coach Houston watched on with great pride when Aishling Oโ€™Connell crashed over in the final minute.

Iโ€™d like to see Brian Kerr given another chance.A very positive forward thinking manager who still has the best win record for Ireland,is younger than Oโ€™Neill, and what he achieved with the Faroe Islands was phenomenal.Spend five minutes on Twitter and the Ipswich fans canโ€™t wait to get rid of Mick. The word dinosaur seems to crop up a lot.For me Kerr who be a no brainer.

@Padraig: I think Kerr could have more of an impact given a remit at under age level, alongside Ruud Dokter. Or maybe even in charge of the under 21 team. Itโ€™s a real pity heโ€™s gone completely unused.

@GARFARKLE: Roy over the senior and Kerr over the under 21s with a consulting role in the seniors, aiding with player transition to the senior side (even with an eye on the under 19s which looks like a hotbed at the moment). That would be great.

I wonder if Johnny Walters is only saying that because heโ€™s gone from Stoke now, and he knows how detrimental MON is to the Irish team with his insistence, like Trappatoniโ€™s, that the Irish players arenโ€™t any good, and thus shouldnโ€™t be allowed play football.

@Gary Oโ€™Hanlon: canโ€™t believe people want Roy Keane as a manager. He is clueless. Passion, desire, commitment thatโ€™s all he ever says.
