Tyrone 0-18
Monaghan 0-14
Fintan O’Toole reports from Croke Park
TYRONE SAW OFF Ulster champions Monaghan in a bad-tempered All-Ireland football quarter-final clash at Croke Park this afternoon to continue their excellent progress through the back door.
Victory for Tyrone sets up a semi-final tie with Kerry on 23 August and Mickey Harte’s side were fully deserving of their four-point triumph.
The game descended into chaos in the closing stages with referee Marty Duffy struggling to keep a handle on proceedings. Monaghan duo Darren Hughes and Paul Finlay were both sent-off as was Tyrone’s Ronan McNamee with several flashpoints emerging all over the pitch in injury-time.
But when the full-time whistle was sounded, Tyrone could celebrate a significant win as their excellent transformation continues since the loss to Donegal in their Ulster opener back in May.
Corner-forwards Darren McCurry and Conor McAlisksey shared 0-11 between them with eight of those points coming from placed balls as they punished Monaghan indiscretions at the back.
At the other end Conor McManus top scored for Monaghan with a 0-7 haul but he was tightly marked throughout by McNamee while Colm Cavanagh and Justin McMahon successfully screened in front of the Monaghan danger man.
The game opened at a smart pace with the teams tied at 0-2 apiece after 5 minutes but gradually Tyrone got on top. McAliskey’s free and a fine point from Peter Harte sent them 0-6 to 0-3 clear by the 23rd minute.
McManus helped Monaghan rally to ensure they were still in touch at the break as they trailed Tyrone by 0-7 to 0-5.
But Tyrone accelerated clear in the second-half. They hit the first three points after the break before McManus replied with a brace.
Mickey Harte’s side continued to score at will and regularly constructed five-point advantages. They got scores from several sectors as well and full-back Ronan McNamee stormed upfield for an inspirational point in the 57th minute that sent them 0-16 to 0-10 clear.
Monaghan tried desperately to get back into contention but the closest they got was three points and couldn’t find the net to ignite their challenge.
The brilliant Mattie Donnelly pointed at the death to seal success for Tyrone.
Scorers for Tyrone: Darren McCurry 0-6 (0-3f, 0-1 ’45), Conor McAliskey 0-5 (0-4f), Mattie Donnelly 0-2, Ronan McNamee, Ronan McNabb, Joe McMahon, Peter Harte, Sean Cavanagh 0-1 each.

McCann should have beem booked for that dive. Darren Hughes ruffled his hair and he went down like he’d been taken out by a sniper. Pathetic, shameful stuff. Hope he’s suitably embarrassed when he watches that back.
I heard he gave McCann a hairline fracture…
Both sides acting like hard men with shoulders and sledging etc and then hitting the deck like a sack of spuds with any form of retaliation was a disgrace!! Would have been laughable if it didn’t p1ss me off so much!!!
Tyrone were by far the better team as well. so why act the bollix?
it was a joke yeah but at least your honest and saod both sides.. some people failed to see that today judging by comments.. they prob cheered when Cavanagh got hit from behind and then cried sending off when he tackles
Because it’s in Tyrone’s nature.
stunning Peter just stunning.
No. 10 and Kavanagh should be ashamed of themselves. Feigning injury to get lads sent off and run down the click. It’s called cheating. Presume they’ll be disciplined. Not
if your gonna have a go at least spell his name correctly.. Cavanagh!! and i suppose you’ll say nothing of the monaghan players no? strange that… TÍR EOGHAIN ABÚ!!!!
Maybe you’re the one has his name spelt wrong!!
No he isn’t. Its Cavanagh!
@michael – can you tell me why the common denominator in these controversial games is almost always Tyrone. They seem to attract it all the time. U21s this year and seniors nearly every year.
Not saying Monaghan are innocent but come on do the maths.
Pronounced Kéavavagh up north.
@peter…. we generally are the common denominator yes and whether thats the ‘us against the world’ mentality or simply that the group of players we have are experts at annoying people and rubbing them up the wrong way via sledging or roughouse tactics on the pitch.. we were always vilified by the southern media for years so to be honest it doesnt bother me as much as it prob should.. i know we are a team that plays cynically.. however, people make out we’re the worst offenders at everything and we’re all that’s wrong with the gaa yet when it happens in other games its generally glossed over!
When was the last controversial tyrone game?
a couple of hours ago.
Hope Kerry hammer Tyrone and put them back in their box. They’ll be too cute to get drawn in by their sledging and mind games
looking forward to it! love playing against kerry…
Really? What position are you?
keeper
Kerry will be to cute for Tyrone , Tyrone actually played some decent footfall, but there playing acting and faking injuries ruined it for them..
sure monaghan were gonna teach us a lesson today according to posters on here and look what happened… looking forward to the game against kerry! getting to the semi final is a lot further than i expected us to get this year so happy days :-)
Tyrone will not be afraid of Kerry but by god I hope Kerry give them a good beating. Despicable team.
I’d agree with that Peter, theyl be on a MISSION to beat us & have psychological edge over Kerry recent years it’s time now we put that to bed!
Iv said it about Tyrone for years there utter cynical footballers stop a team from playing football @ all cost!
It’s sick & frustrating to watch & officials have take stand stop it or video review group from GAA set up & suspend cynical cheating(diving) offensive as they see fit to cut that cancer out in our game! This great Irish sport let’s not cheat like soccer!
Marty Duffy should be forced into retirement after that performance.
Not easy to ref a match when u had so much blatant diving from Tyrone , u can’t look at Sean Cavanagh without him dropping on the deck
They were both at it. He doesn’t know what a free is, he doesn’t know the difference between black, yellow&red & there’s no such thing as a quick free or kickout when he’s involved. Outrageously poor decision to let him ref an all Ireland quarter final.
I from Kerry and can say we’re are no Angels when it comes to cynical stuff, the replay against Mayo last year ended in similar chaos. Everyone needs to take responsibility to root out this crap. It’s so hard to watch.
thank you, im not from Tyrone but everyone seems to have an agenda against them, in particular Sean Cavanagh. Every team is cynical, get over it. You need a bit of cynicism in a team to win an All Ireland. What does annoy is when teams start the stupid pulling and dragging and all that comes of it is two yellows. Give them both reds and it’ll be out of the game in no time.
Yet again Tyrone disgrace themselves in winning.
It’s sad times when you realise GAA is going the same way as soccer. Diving and faking injuries to get the other team’s players sent off and to waste times needs to be punished severely. It’s a cancer that is destroying a number of sports
soccer tactics from Tyrone.
Is soccer a bad game?
I don’t think we need to jump on the gaa turning Into soccer bandwagon it’s just Tyrone being scunbags nothing new there
yeeeeeessssssssssssssss!! bring on the haters :-)
See ya in 2 weeks!
at least this time ill not have the kerry ex sitting beside me :-)
Jesus you must have been painfull come the championship….she made good her escape I’d say
yeah she got rid of me just before keery hammered us in killarney.. more fool her :-)
kerry even*
let her go Michael it will eat you up
she’s already text me about the game ;-( it hurts so much
meet her for the game Michael chance your arm for one for oultime sake, you never know.
nah me current english mrs is wayyy better!! plus she actively encourages me to go to the game or the pub to watch Celtic so i cant complain… tho i might beast the gym for 2 weeks and meet her then a d hopefully celebrate infront of her! last time i went to a game with her keery got beat in the all ireland final… that was a bad day! unhappy mrs so no…………….
maybe your right.
Up Tyrone!!!!! Brilliant performance. Bring on the red thumbs… sure it’s 1/5 of a red hand!
Tyrone into an all ireland semi final where they belong. Monaghan beat. Donegal beat. Great day for the parish.
