Setback for Dublin hurling manager Ger Cunningham as coach Tommy says he's Dunne

Work and college commitments have forced the Tipp man’s hand.

WORK AND COLLEGE commitments have forced Tommy Dunne to quit his role as coach of the Dublin senior hurling team.

Dunne has told Damian Lawlor in today’s Sunday Independent that he’s unable to continue as part of manager Ger Cunningham’s backroom team, having recently returned to third-level education.

The former Tipperary captain, who’s also self-employed, has committed to a Sports Performance course at the University of Limerick.

“The course is two years part-time and I just commenced it last month,” Dunne said. “I am also self-employed with significant travel involved for work. Because of that I am unable to commit to the huge time demands now required for top-level team preparation.”

Dunne first joined the Dublin set-up during Anthony Daly’s tenure as boss, but was reappointed last November when Ger Cunningham took over.

The 2001 All-Ireland winning captain, who also coached the Tipp seniors in 2011 and ’12, added: “It was a really enjoyable experience working with the Dublin players, management and board over the last two to three years, and I wish all involved every success in the future.”

Sparky was my hero in them days was so delighted when fergie brought him back and then devastated when he left again. Always went for the spectacular and 9 out of 10 times it came off.

Feel sorry for Moyes obviously a sell to buy policy in place. I suppose he feels he needs a backup forward in case Defoe gets injured so has to sell Van Aanholt to get Ulloa and Gibson.

But he’s a defender and he has one flaw, he can’t defend.
