Drogheda United make surprise appointment by naming 33-year-old defender their new manager

Former Bray Wanderers centre-half Tim Clancy will working alongside new director of football Dave Robertson.

DROGHEDA UNITED HAVE announced Tim Clancy as their new first-team manager for the 2018 campaign.

The Louth club, who were relegated from the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division this year thanks to finishing bottom place, confirmed last month that Pete Mahon was stepping down after two seasons in charge.

And 33-year-old defender Clancy has been named as Mahonโ€™s successor this evening.

The Meath man had spells in Scotland with Kilmarnock, Motherwell, Hibernian and St Johnstone before returning to Ireland in 2015 to line out with Shamrock Rovers and Sligo Rovers.

He has most recently been on the books at Bray Wanderers, but told The42 over the summer that he was hoping to get into management.

โ€œIโ€™ve nearly got the A Licence now, I get the results next week and Iโ€™d imagine I passed it,โ€ he said back in June. โ€œMy priority will be to stay in football. I want to go into management so Iโ€™ll try get into the Pro Licence as soon as I can.โ€

Drogheda have also revealed that Clancy will work with former Sligo Rovers boss Dave Robertson, who comes in as the new director of football.

The 44-year-old ex-Peterborough United has been out of work since parting company with the Bit Oโ€™Red in April.

The42 has just published its first book, Behind The Lines, a collection of some of the yearโ€™s best sports stories. Pick up your copy in Easonโ€™s, or order it here today (โ‚ฌ10):
