MUNSTER HAVE CONFIRMED the signing of South African wing/fullback Thaakir Abrahams from Lyon on a two-year deal.
The move was first reported Lyon-based publication Le Progrès after being released from the last year of his deal with the Top 14 club. Munster had been searching for a new signing in the back three and were granted approval by the IRFU to bring in a non-Irish-qualified player.
Abrahams joins in the summer after one year with Lyon where he scored five tries in 13 appearances, including four tries in the Champions Cup. The 25-year-old is fast and pacey and will provide a strong option in the back three. Shane Daly and Calvin Nash are the current starting wings for Munster, while Mike Haley is an experienced full-back.
Abrahams becomes the ninth new addition to the Munster senior squad ahead of next season with Billy Burns, Tom Farrell and Diarmuid Kilgallen also joining the province.
A former South Africa U20 international, Abrahams captained Paarl Boys High in his school days before helping the Junior Springboks to a third-placed finish at the 2019 U20 World Cup.
He represented Western Province at underage level before moving to Durban to join the Sharks, quickly making his Super Rugby debut in 2020.
His three seasons at Sharks saw Abrahams impress in the Champions Cup, URC, Super Rugby and Currie Cup competitions before his move to Lyon last summer.
Elsewhere, Brian Gleeson, Edwin Edogbo, Mark Donnelly, Tony Butler and Ethan Coughlan are also stepping up from the Academy to the senior squad.
Additionally, Eoghan Clarke and Oli Jager joined the province mid-season and have made a big impact. Clarke recently penned a one-year extension with Jager signing until 2027.

I would rather see the money spent on a quality LH as it’s a position we’re a bit light on.
@TL55: unfortunately there’s no decent IQ options available and the IRFU won’t give approval to sign an NIQ
@Barry McGarry: Which is daft imo. I can understand limiting the overall number of NIQ players a province can have but a province should be able to sign one in that position. The result in this case is that Dave Kilcoyne who has been consistently injured over the last several seasons has had his contract renewed. If he can stay fit he’d be a very useful member of the squad but based on recent history that’s a big if.
@TL55: oh I know. Let’s hope David Humphreys rules a little clearer than Nucifora who seemed to make it up as he went along. A couple of season back Munster sought dispensation for an NIQ prop and were rejected. Nucifora said he wouldn’t sanction any NIQ front row players for any province. The following season Ulster signed Rory Sutherland and Jacob Toomaga Allen on season long deals and then announced Kitshoff on a three year deal. Leinster also signed Al’alatoa at the same time. @damien reidy: We’re fairly stacked in the back row. POM, Coombes, Kendellan, Gleeson, Hodnett, O’Donoghue, Quinn, O’Sullivan and Sean Edogbo likely to to join them. Injuries did help his cause.
