PAUL POGBA PUT pen to paper on a five-year deal with Manchester United yesterday as he returns to Old Trafford for a world record fee of £89m (€105m).
It is the first time in their history that Man Utd have broken the world transfer record. They’ve become the first English team to do so since Newcastle United signed Alan Shearer from Blackburn Rovers for £15m in 1996.
Here are the last 10 teams to break the world transfer record, listed by their most recent big-money signing.
1. Manchester United – Paul Pogba from Juventus for £89m – 2016
2. Real Madrid – Gareth Bale from Tottenham for £86m- 2013
*Real Madrid also broke the transfer record for Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaká, Zinedine Zidane and Luis Figo between 2000 and 2009.
3. Lazio – Hernan Crespo from Parma for £35.5m – 2000
4. Inter Milan – Christian Vieri from Lazio for £32.1m – 1999
*Inter Milan also broke the transfer record for Ronaldo in 1997
5. Real Betis – Denílson from São Paulo for £21.5m – 1998
6. Newcastle – Alan Shearer from Blackburn for £15m – 1996
7. Barcelona – Ronaldo from PSV Eindhoven for £13.2m – 1996
8. AC Milan – Gianluigi Lentini from Torino for £13m – 1992
*AC Milan also broke the transfer record for Jean-Pierre Papin in 1992 and Ruud Gullit in 1987
9. Juventus – Gianluca Vialli from Sampdoria for £12m – 1992
*Juventus also broke the transfer record for Roberto Baggio in 1990
10. Napoli – Diego Maradona from Barcelona for £6.9m – 1984

Ah Lentini, if it wasn’t for that crash! Ah those were the days channel 4 and the hour long highlights on network 2 on a Monday!
Serie A had some serious talent back in the day
£13 for Ronald in 1996 what a bargain.
Comes in 3′s. Andy Carroll, Sterling……
Massimo Taibi, would be worth 25 mil now, Poulson maybe the same……..
Would hardly call 6.9 million a “miniscule” fee. That would have been massive in the 80s.
Should c.ronaldo not be on this list?
It’s last 10 teams, real are already on it
Yeah I thought that at first too but then read the article again although a list of the 10 most expensive signings might be a bit more relevant. If the list was done that way then Ronaldo, Zidane and (I think) Figo would also be there.
The world record fee wasn’t broken once between 2000
& 2013?? That can’t be right. Sure Veron cost United £40m in 2004. And you missed the obvious one – £80m that Real paid Utd for C Ronaldo in 2009.
Thought we dealt in €
