ANTHONY STOKES SAYS he would love the opportunity to play for the Republic of Ireland in their Euro 2012 play-off against Estonia, but does not know if he has a chance after falling out with Giovanni Trapattoni in the summer.
The Celtic striker withdrew from the squad for the Carling Nations Cup clashes against Northern Ireland and Scotland, upsetting Trapattoni in the process, but says he is currently more than happy to answer Trap’s call.
“Honestly, I would love to be back in the international set-up, but there is nothing I can do if I don’t get there,” Stokes told Sky Sports. “I am playing reasonably well at the moment and I am happy with my performances.
“I still want to improve but if I get the call it would be great. If not I will just focus on my club football.”
Stokes, who has scored five times in the SPL this season, went on to explain his absence in the summer, insisting he went through the proper channels to contact Trapattoni.
“I think there was a misunderstanding the last time,” he added.
