EX-LIVERPOOL CAPTAIN Steven Gerrard is a surprise candidate to become the manager of Scottish Premiership club Rangers.
The 37-year-old, who retired from playing in 2016, has emerged as one of the favourites to take over at the Glasgow outfit, according to multiple sources including the BBC.
Rangers sacked manager Pedro Caixinha back in October, and Graeme Murty has in charge on an interim basis since then.
They are currently second in Scotlandโs top flight but trail Old Firm rivals Celtic by 10 points. The sides meet at Parkhead on Sunday, when the Hoops can wrap up a seventh successive title by earning three points.
Rangers have Gerrard on their shortlist for the position, and handing him the role would represent his first senior managerial job. Having turned down the chance to manage MK Dons two years ago, he has been coaching with Liverpoolโs underage teams.
The appointment would also pit the ex-England midfielder against his former Reds manager Brendan Rodgers, who has been hugely successful at Celtic since arriving in 2016.

Makes perfect sense. The Rangers board have gone after the last man to stop Brendan Rodgers win a league title!!
@Garreth Brennan: now this I Iike!!!
@Garreth Brennan: brilliant
@Garreth Brennan: Just so you know I read this comment, put down my phone, stood up and gave a slow but meaningful clap.
Celtic/Liverpool fans in Ireland headโs are currently exploding all over the country, stay safe!!
@Malachy Rivers: Er not really Gerrard was always an egocentric clown and i think the rangers job would be a terrible choice for him, what can he achive there . Celtic also need rangers to improve to impove themselves
Why would you degrade yourself by getting involved with that setup.
Long time link between Liverpool and rangers so this is really no surprise. Historically rangers have a big fan base in liverpool while Everton were regarded as the irish catholic club and were more closely aligned to celtic .
@Joe Oโriordan: โhistoricallyโ being the key word.
@Stephen Keane: well ye never stop talking about yer history
Please let this happen.
I honestly hope this doesnโt happen.
Paul le Guen apparently was offered the chance to stay on with Lyon but wanted to take the Rangers job instead, I know it was a while ago but seems bizarre still
Liverpool u 18 s is a tougher job ? He should prove himself there first . Only one team in Scotland to manage and Liverpool already gave them their manager . Maybe sir Alex might be tempted out of retirement to manage his former club ?
@Tricksy: his former club died. You know, the one that forced him from the club because of who he married.
He wonโt step outside the comfort zone of Merseyside. Afraid to join a really good Chelsea. Struggled in LA when nobody bowed and scraped to him . Hope Klop watching his back.
@Enda Layng: Slippy got Rodgers the sack , which is a fate that will eventually catch up with Klopp as long as Slippy is there
@Nucky: you talk some sh**e, lad.
Hopefully he signs for them dirty s**m bags and Brendan and the lads can put him in his place and send him back to Liverpool with his tail between his legs . Wonโt be able to change the fortunes and I donโt know why rangers would think he can he had zero experience and they are not a bit enough club to compete with Celtic anymore so strange of both the club and gerrard as it will only end one way and that I can guarantee !
@Niall James Fergal McCormack:
Well said.
Doesnโt matter where he is from. Heโs learning the badges and if itโs rangers so be it. He has to start somewhere. Just like the rest of the folk here as civil servants. Afraid of a job
@Eoin Ryan: he will be sacked after 6 months . Itโs career suicide !
Rangers are a car wreck ..Steve G is one of the best footballers ever in the premiershipโฆ.if he was going to last till Christmas ..he would need ally Mc coist as his number 2โฆ.Sam Alardyce would be a better shout
Fcuk off thereโs too many Irish links with Liverpool and for anyone who disagrees the Fields of Anfield Road is just the starting point
@Ollie Watson: Gerrard hardly cares about Irish links.
@Ollie Watson: arenโt Liverpool the Orange team in the city?
@Ciaran Rice: What bullshit.
@Ciaran Rice: absolutely true โฆ.
@Professional Chef: Iโm pretty certain itโs not bullshit.
@Professional Chef: Itโs completely true. LFC was founded by high level orange order members and always had close ties.
@Harry Corry: just googled. The actual founder of the club was an Orange man and a high ranking member of the Conservative party. Many members of the clubs first board were also in the Orange Order.
I donโt have any strong feeling about Liverpool either way but thatโs a particular unsavoury part of their history.
@Ciaran Rice: m
@Ciaran Rice: ever listen to the slags in Liverpool the toffees are welsh and the Kopites are Republican Irish or Norwegian. Many clubs have been found by Orange men I presume
@Ollie Watson: somehow I doubt very much that โmanyโ clubs have been formed by members of the Orange order. Liverpool certainly were, we do know that.
Rangers are sh#te rangers are sh#te
