Stephen Kenny experienced various emotions on Tuesday night.

'It was too strong. It wasn't a word I should have used' - Stephen Kenny in reflective mood

The Ireland manager admits his frustration at how the Nations League ended, as he eyes more clean sheets in Euro 2024 campaign.

ONCE THE DUST had settled on the final two games of Irelandโ€™s Nations League campaign, Stephen Kenny had the time to reassess a couple of matters.

He explained as much during a 35-minute Zoom call on Friday afternoon.

For one, the Ireland manager accepted that his tone in the immediate aftermath of the 3-2 win over Armenia did not reflect his true feelings.

Indeed, insisting that it was โ€œconvincingโ€ and highlighting his sideโ€™s ability to string 20-30 passes together, despite throwing away a two-goal lead in a maddening two-minute spell late in the second half, was labelled โ€œa vanity projectโ€ by former international Gary Breen.

โ€œListen, Gary is entitled to his opinion as anyone is, I think youโ€™re always going to get strong opinions in this arena and thatโ€™s part of it,โ€ Kenny said.

โ€œI did say in the TV interview afterwards that it was an exceptional performance against Armenia, which was too strong a word, it wasnโ€™t a word I should have used.

โ€œIt wasnโ€™t an exceptional performance. I accept that. But there were a lot of very good aspects to the performance.โ€

While Kenny held firm on his insistence that Scotland shouldnโ€™t have been awarded their decisive penalty during the 2-1 defeat at Hampden Park, citing Lyndon Dykesโ€™ slip into the feet of Alan Browne, he accepted that the โ€œflipside of the argumentโ€ was that the spot kick given against Armenia could have gone either way.

โ€œIt wasnโ€™t one that we were shouting the houses down forโ€ฆ Itโ€™s not the way we would have wanted it, donโ€™t get me wrong, to leave it so late to have to win,โ€ he continued.

โ€œThere was no euphoric feeling in the dressing room afterwards. We were all annoyed, all disappointed with ourselves for letting that slip. We werenโ€™t high fiving each other. We knew that we had a good position and let it slip, we should never do that. Thatโ€™s clear.

Iโ€™m very encouraged by the capacity to score goals throughout the team, and we can make improvements in other areas.โ€

Ireland did manage to compose themselves and regain the initiative against Armenia, but the sloppy nature in which they relinquished such a comfortable position was something Kenny seemed keen to address.

He insisted that the friendlies with Norway and Malta next month will be used as a means to fine tune matters ahead of the Euro 2024 qualifiers in March, rather than an opportunity for further experimentation with new faces.

โ€œWe have conceded goals and thatโ€™s something Iโ€™m not happy about. Particularly the two goals the other night, they were poor goals to concede from our point of view,โ€ Kenny said.

โ€œIn order to qualify weโ€™ll need to keep clean sheets because [we] had a run of clean sheets coming into the summer of Portugal home, Azerbaijan and Luxembourg away.

โ€œBut we need to have that culture of not conceding.โ€

Expanding on that theme, Kenny spoke positively about the nature of competition for places throughout the squad, adding that Jayson Molumby showed promise deputising for Josh Cullen in the centre of the midfield, despite being substituted early in the second half after coming dangerously close to receiving a second yellow card.

โ€œWe need that, we canโ€™t be relying on one player in certain positions. We need that sort of back-up.

โ€œI am happy that there is an element of competition in all areas and clear ideas of what is expected of them, and the development of the team as a group,โ€ the manager reasoned.

We canโ€™t have those situations like the other day where we vacate the middle of the field, like we did for their first goal and left ourselves way open.

โ€œThe second goal, obviously, was just an individual mistake and we just canโ€™t make those. We have to make sure that we donโ€™t concede goals in that period.

โ€œThe protection to our back three is vitally important and Josh Cullen provides that brilliantly, I must say,โ€ Kenny explained.

โ€œA player like him, with those defensive instincts, you are unlikely to concede the type of goals we conceded against Armenia. We just have to get that culture of getting back to focusing on keeping clean sheets.

โ€œThe hardest thing is to score goals, thatโ€™s the hardest part. We scored three against Armenia, three against Scotland at home, and we looked like we have the capacity, since Michael Obafemi, he has given us the ability to score and create goals. They werenโ€™t clear chances, they were terrific strikes.

michael-obafemi-celebrates-scoring-his-sides-second-goal Michael Obafemi has become a mainstay. James Crombie / INPHO James Crombie / INPHO / INPHO

โ€œThat has given us much more encouragement. Troy Parrott is a little bit, maybe not at the level he was in the summer when his confidence was high. These things are cyclical.

โ€œCompetition for places, we will see who comes in in good form in November, in March, and these decisions can change based on playersโ€™ form at their clubs.

You do like to have some continuity in your selection at international level but sometimes your form at your club can make a difference and get you in the team.โ€

Ireland finished third in their group, scoring eight times and conceding seven. Of the 14 other teams in League B (Russia being excluded from the competition) only three scored more than Kennyโ€™s men.

Two of them happened to be Irelandโ€™s opponents โ€“ table toppers Scotland and second placed Ukraine โ€“ while Serbia netted 13 times in six games.

Itโ€™s clear, then, that finding that defensive solidity to match a growing confidence in the final third is now crucial for progress.

Ireland also dropped five points from winning positions against the top two and, allied with that near miss on Tuesday night and the opening defeat in Yerevan, the ability to stifle rivals while in the ascendancy is not yet something they have mastered.

โ€œQualification for the Euros is really what would be special for everyone in Ireland, for all Irish people everywhere,โ€ Kenny acknowledged.

โ€œThatโ€™s what weโ€™re trying to build a team towards, and most people can see the potential in the team. They can see a lot of good things happening but there are areas we need to get better at still. We just have make sure that by March we improve again.

troy-parrott-scores-his-sides-second-goal Kenny admitted Troy Parrott was lacking the same confidence as he had in June, when he scored against Scotland (above). James Crombie / INPHO James Crombie / INPHO / INPHO

โ€œWe have to consider a couple of players showing good form and we donโ€™t want too many changes coming in again and replacing, it has to be based on merit or on players who will improve us, we donโ€™t want too many changes, we want an element of continuity going into the European Championship qualifiers.

โ€œIโ€™m not a slave to any one system,โ€ he added. โ€œItโ€™s not based on โ€˜I believe in one system and we fit the players to that systemโ€™. You have to be adaptable.

โ€œThe reason we picked these systems is essentially because we are trying to fit a system that suits the players at our disposal. The players that are emerging, a system that maximises the potential of the players we have.โ€

A well-worn tale of woe was thrown Kennyโ€™s way on this topic, when it was pointed out that Ireland lack a creative No.10 and exciting winger capable of helping to create more clear-cut chances.

Wes Hoolahan and Damien Duff were mentioned.

Kenny wasnโ€™t biting.

There is no point in me lamenting that we havenโ€™t got this type of player or that type of player. Iโ€™d rather focus on what we have got and trying to maximise the potential. Thatโ€™s my job, as manager, to try and maximise the potential of the players we have got.

โ€œWe have got a lot of talent. Maybe we donโ€™t have the archetypal player in certain positions but itโ€™s not something that leaves me worried.

โ€œI feel there is tremendous effort and collective will in the group, they give everything of themselves and there is a determination to improve again. We know we have to improve again.

โ€œWe are formulating a team, you can see the evolution of the team and you can see a lot of players really emerging, and it looks like we are going to be a good team. We have seen that from large parts of the display against Scotland, but we have to continue to get better in this period and use the two games in November to improve and make sure that we are ready for March.โ€

Unfortunately Stephen has taken these well paid some Premier league some championship and some lower division professional footballers as far as he can. The fai could not afford a proper professional manager and that is why we are in the position we are in. Pity as no buzz around Irish international soccer now.

@Jim Casey: We are in the position we are in because the FAI neglected to develop the game for 20 years and threw money at high profile managers whose sole ambition was to get us to a major tournament and the cash the FAI needed to keep the show on the road. Whether or not Kenny is the right man for the job is another matter, but most of the problems we have are not of his making. Indeed, somebody had to do the job he is doing and the next manager will probably reap the rewards of his work.

@Jim Casey: surely the Kenny project is only in its early stages? Iโ€™m not saying he will succeed but he has just integrated a load of young players into international football, results havenโ€™t been great, or even good, but he will succeed or fail on the Euro 24 qualification group. I also reckon irish soccer supporters are eagerly awaiting the draw and canโ€™t wait to see who we get in the group.

@Mike Kennedy: The Kenny era only continues if we qualify. We are third seeds so that is unlikely. Some would say heโ€™s been lucky to survive this long. Either way he has done Irish football a service and no other manager would have had the stones to rebuild the way he has.

@Jim Casey: โ€œno buzz around Irish international soccer nowโ€? You obviously donโ€™t go to the games. The atmosphere at Ireland matches is the best itโ€™s been in years. Despite some of the poor results weโ€™ve had, Ireland matches are far more entertaining than they had been for a decade under various previous managers. Think your assessment is way off the mark

@Jim Casey: No buzz. The man is trying to completely change the way we play football at international level from the caveman stuff. Most are happy to see that. The players are clearly happy with what he is trying to do and have said so. We have an Irish man who has come through the league of ireland, bringing through a host of young players playing attractive football. Grass roots football people in this country are hoping he succeeds and will support them in the qualifying for the Euros. Think you need to find something else to give ya a buzz Jimโ€ฆ

@Declan Doyle: Unfortunately, the cohort of people who donโ€™t go to games and have no involvement in the game other than watching on TV are the ones who make the most noise and, ultimately, have the greatest influence. They demand instant results canโ€™t see the long term. They just want a piss up every two years and have zero interest beyond that. This has always been the way.

@Brian Murphy: well some of us Brian do not have the luxury of taking time off work, drive to Dublin (3.5hours x 2), organise tickets and afford it in the first place. Yes I watch the games on the television but I want the team to succeed as much as the next person & Kenny too btw

@Noel Doherty: Thatโ€™s fair enough. I canโ€™t go to games either at the moment as I have three young kids. Beyond going to matches there is a huge number of people playing in and volunteering in the game here week in week out who are hugely invested. Itโ€™s those who have zero involvement other than constant sniping and looking for managers to be sacked who should have the least say. They are ten a penny around here.

Thereโ€™s a hell of a lot right with what Kennyโ€™s trying to do here and it totally outweighs the wrong.
At the end of the day we have a championship level of player available to us. Not one player would get near an England or a French squad, no mind their first teams.
Our best hope for success is build a really cohesive well drilled team who will try play ball and die for each other out on the pitch.
Thatโ€™s the only way we will punch above our weight and as far as I can see Kenny is on the right track to achieving that

To be honest the Irish international project is going to take time. This crop of players is a result of the Delaney era n the lack of investment in grass roots football. Since then the board now that they have limited finances are going back to basics and putting money back into the grass root element and slowly we are starting to see players coming up through.

Sports development takes an age, it is slow and filled with set backs but the focus has to get as many kids playing, keep them playing and identify large numbers that could make it and the support all of them. Itโ€™s very difficult as so many life factors can get in the way can cause talent to turn away or stagnate in their development. Also takes an huge amount of mental strength. Itโ€™s all about TIME with Ireland at the moment
