STEPHEN KENNY HAS a fully-fit travelling party to select from for tomorrow nightโs Uefa Nations League clash with Bulgaria [KO 7.45pm, Sky Sports] but says he has not yet decided on his starting XI.
โI havenโt, I will do that in due courseโ, he told the media over Zoom from Sofia this morning. โWeโve been working over the two days on how weโll play, but no, I have not picked the team yet.โ
The squad was hit by a couple of withdrawals earlier this week โ Troy Parrott and Kieran OโHara have been replaced by Seani Maguire and Caoimhin Kelleher, while itโs hoped David McGoldrick will be fit to link up with the squad ahead of Sundayโs game with Finland โ but they have reported a clean bill of health upon arrival in Sofia, meaning James McCarthy is likely to make his first international appearance in almost four years.
Kenny was coy on his likely team selection, however, although he has indicated he will play with a back four, which leaves him with the now-eternal selection dilemma of picking either Matt Doherty or captain Seamus Coleman at right-back.
Kenny has been bullish when asked of his ambitions for the Irish team โ to change the international perception of the Irish team was his line last week โ but admitted today it wonโt be achieved overnight.
โYouโre not going to radically change everything in two days, thatโs not realistic, but we want to play with confidence โ thatโs important. We want to have the balance of the team right so that we can be creative and create chances.
โThe balance of the team is important and we want to have speed in out attack as well. Itโs very important that we have speed in our attack, that weโre a real threat when we need to be.โ
Kenny says he had to modify his training plans slightly earlier this week as he wasnโt expecting so many of his players to complete 90-minute games last Saturday, but has otherwise been impressed by the intensity his players have brought to sessions so far.
โThey seem like great peopleโ, said Kenny of his players. โI wouldnโt take any great credit for bonding the group, there are a lot of really good people, a lot of humility, thatโs very evident. All of the staff have commented on that, there is great humility in this group of players.โ
Tomorrow will finally draw to a close Kennyโs long wait to take charge of the senior international team, the game coming 648 days after he first signed a contract with the FAI. He has not yet found too much time for reflection ahead of tomorrowโs kick-off, however.
โIf I took time and reflected on that, there is no doubt that it is [the biggest game of his career] but I havenโt had that period of introspection, I have been focused on the game itself and thatโs how I view it.
โWe are just preparing the team as best we can, all of the coaching staff have been fantastic, Keith Andrews, Damien Duff and Alan Kelly, really terrific, so we are just focusing on the game itself, how we are going to play, and the challenge of playing in an empty stadium.
โSome of the players have got really used to that, we know itโs not the same โ the connection between players and supporters, the energy that brings โ but I am not looking at it from my own point of view, I donโt have time for that, We just have to get ready to try and prepare the team and try to perform well.โ
The Nations League has a pretty byzantine structure, but the games are significant as they will inform seeding for the World Cup qualifiers later this year along with giving Kenny and his players essential time to work together ahead of next monthโs Euro 2020 playoff with Slovakia.
The players will train at the Stadion Vasil Levski in Sofia later today, ahead of tomorrow nightโs kick-off.
Randolph
Doherty Duffy Egan Stevens
Molumby McCarthy Hourihane
OโDowda Idah Connolly
McClean and Hendrick need a kick up the you know where after their performances in recent years before they can get picked again.
Coleman/ Doherty and Robinson/ OโDowda were tight calls
@Gareth Ward: Iโd go with your keeper, defence and midfield but up front Iโd start Long with Connelly and McClean either side of him. McClean had a good season at club level where he was named player of the season. For that reason Iโd start him but youโre right, heโs been shite at national level for awhile so he needs a performance. Long for his experience ahead of Idah.
I agree with you re Hendrick, but to be honest Iโd not have ODowda on the team as he hasnโt improved since he came onto the scene.
@Ger: I duno about mcclean, he won a public vote for player of the season for a terrible stoke team. I wouldnt read much into it
So what are we thinking of the starting line up? Taking that he will opt for a 4-3-3 I would like to see;
Randolph, Stevens, Egan, Duffy, Doherty, hourihane, McCarthy, arter, robinson, long, Connolly.
@Seagoat returns: not arter Jesus
@Darren Mullins: fair enough, you thinking hendrick or molumby? Not the biggest fan of hendrick
@Seagoat returns: has to be molumby, arter & Hendrick two of the biggest backpass merchants we have
@Seagoat returns: I like this one. A real age mix.
We wonโt get it but

Doherty.Duffy.Egan.Stevens
Molumby.McCarthy.Hourihane
Brady.Idah.Connolly
Brady maybe an unpopular one but would offer balance having a left footer on the right and Connolly cutting in on the left.Honestly think heโs gonna play Doherty and McClean on the wings though.
@Nic Antonio: heโll go 4-3-3. He rarely moves away from that formation, at least to start. So for that reason I donโt see him playing wingers. Weโre lucky to have fullbacks who are good at getting up and down the field so weโll get good width from them.
@Ger: most modern day 4-3-3โs have one winger and one โoutside forwardโ
Mick Oโ should be in the squad and in the starting 11, nightmare to play against.
