FILE THIS ONE under ‘bizarre injuries’. Or maybe ‘foolish training ground antics’.
During St Mirren’s training session last week, club captain Steven Thompson thought it would be a good idea to throw a spiked pole at team-mate John McGinn — stabbing the Scotland U21 midfielder in the thigh.
The pole went one centimetre into his leg during the incident, which happened after Thompson had lost possession to the midfielder during a dribbling routine and he is expected to be out for three weeks.
“I’m mortified by the whole thing,” the BBC report Thompson as saying. “It was a daft prank.”
I threw it for a laugh, stupid me trying to be funny, and unfortunately it’s anything but. It’s a total disaster,” he also told the Scottish Sun.
It comes as little surprise that McGinn wasn’t seeing the funny side of it either.
“I’ve been shocked by it, to be honest, really down about it,” he said. “I like a laugh and a joke in training, but for something like this to happen is just unbelievable.”
Must have the iq of a ham sandwich.
A 36 year old moron assaulted a 20 year old kid with a spear. That’s basically what happened here.
I’d file that under ‘total muppetry’.
And this guy is the club captain!?
No I wouldn’t Paddy but my incident would not be all over the papers. He’s the captain and not some idiot. I’m sure he’s very remorseful and he’s held his hand up a said sorry but as soon as it left the training ground and got in to the papers he can expect some tough questions.
So he stabbed the kid, usually an arrestable offence for me and you. But he’s a footballer so everything is okay because it’s a prank and not a criminal offence. Just a thought!
David, would you file a report against a friend for a prank that went horribly wrong? Especially with the knowledge that he had no intention of hurting you and you see how remorseful he was? I don’t know what your man was doing throwing a spear at someone, but it was probably a massive brain fart with no real malaise behind it.
They’re not friends, they’re co-workers Paddy.
Ah the mentality of the modern soccerball player….
