SHAMROCK ROVERS’ INDIAN journey has come to an end as they were defeated 1-0 by Brazilian club Atletico Paranaense in the Sait Nagjee Cup.
Having earned a spot in the semi-finals of the pre-season tournament thanks to wins over 1860 Munich and the Argentina U23s, the Dublin side were playing for a place in the final this afternoon.
Pat Fenlon named a strong starting XI with recent signings Dean Clarke and Gary Shaw both included.
And former Longford Town striker Shaw came close on 12 minutes — hitting the post from a tight angle.
Atletico struck the crossbar on 35 minutes but the game remained scoreless heading into half-time.
It was Clarke’s turn to then be denied by the woodwork shortly after the restart but Rovers fell behind on 62 minutes through Yago dal Silva’s terrific 30-yard effort.
A shot from Brandon Miele crashed off the upright in the closing minutes but it wasn’t to be the League of Ireland club’s day and they head home with their opening Premier Division fixture of the season away to Sligo Rovers just two weeks’ away.
