Sarsfields, Midleton and Glen Rovers book Cork senior hurling semi-final places

Three quarter-finals took place on Leeside today.

SARSFIELDS, MIDLETON AND Glen Rovers all secured spots in the semi-finals of the Cork senior hurling championship with quarter-final wins today.

Reigning champions Sarsfields will now face 2007 kingpins Erins Own at the semi-final stage while 2013 champions Midleton will meet last yearโ€™s beaten finalists Glen Rovers in the other last four encounter.

Sarsfields saw off divisional side Imokilly by 0-20 to 0-16 in an East Cork battle at Cobh this afternoon. At the break Sarsfields were ahead 0-12 to 0-9 but they had been in front by 0-8 to 0-2 after 11 minutes.

Cian McCarthy and Eoin Oโ€™Sullivan scored freely for Sarsfields while Willie Leahy and Declan Dalton were on target to haul Imokilly back in to contention.

In the third quarter Sarsfields pushed on again with McCarthy pointing the way as they went in front by 0-18 to 0-12. Imokilly attempted to make inroads to that advantage through Paudie Oโ€™Sullivan and Declan Dalton but the Pat Ryan managed side held on for a four point win.

At Pรกirc Uรญ Rinn, Midleton ran out 1-17 to 0-11 winners over Douglas in the first game of a double-header. Despite missing the injured Conor Lehane, Midleton were in front 0-9 to 0-7 at the break.

Cormac Walsh did most of the scoring damage for them while Mark Oโ€™Connor showed up well for a Douglas side that only amassed three points from play in the first-half.

At the third quarter mark Midleton were 0-10 to 0-8 in front but they pushed to lead 0-14 to 0-10 with seven minutes left. Then they pounced for the only goal of the game that finished the contest when James Nagle netted after good work from Brian Hartnett.

The second match at Pรกirc Uรญ Rinn ended in a 1-22 to 2-12 victory for Glen Rovers over Newtownshandrum. Patrick Horganโ€™s free taking helped the Glen go 0-6 to 0-3 in front after the first quarter.

But the teams were deadlocked at 1-4 to 0-7 after Jamie Coughlan raised a green flag for Newtownshandrum in the 21st minute. Horgan and Conor Dorris restored the Glenโ€™s lead before Coughlan smashed home his second goal in the 26th minute.

Glen Rovers recovered to go ahead 0-13 to 2-6 at the break and then got an early second-half boost when Brian Phelanโ€™s goal sent them ahead by 1-15 to 2-7.

The teams traded points then with Cathal Naughton and Michael Thompson helping to keep Newtownshandrum in the hunt as they trailed 1-18 to 2-12 entering the final quarter.

But Glen Rovers reeled off four points without reply in the closing stages courtesy of Phelan and Horgan (3) to secure a seven-point win and set up a semi-final showdown with Midleton.
