McIlroy loses three-shot lead and finishes third as Adam Scott claims back-to-back wins

Adam Scott won WGC-Cadilac Championship but it was a disappointing final round for Rory McIlroy.

ADAM SCOTT MADE it back-to-back wins with a one-shot victory at the WGC-Cadillac Championship last night.

The Australian, who ended his title drought at The Honda Classic a week ago, carded a three-under 69 to finish at 12 under at Trump National Doral in Miami, Florida.

Scott overcame some nervy moments late in his round to finish ahead of Bubba Watson (68), who was runner-up for the third time.

But there was disappointment for Rory McIlroy who finished third on 10 under after hitting a 74. McIlroy had began the final round with a four-shot lead.

Englishman Danny Willett (69) finished in a tie for third with McIlroy.

Scott had two double-bogeys on the front nine but four birdies in five holes beginning at the 10th put him in the hunt.

He found the bunker off the tee on the 16th and 17th holes but recovered to produce pars on both.

The former world number one put himself in more trouble on the last and was fortunate not to find water with his second shot.

โ€œI hit it right where I aimed it,โ€ Scott said. โ€œI was so lucky for it to stay up inside the hazard line.โ€

McIlroy held a three-shot overnight lead, but two bogeys on the front nine and another at the 13th dealt his chances a blow.

Watson produced a four-under 68 that included an eagle, three birdies and a bogey.

American Phil Mickelson (70) was outright fifth at nine under, a shot ahead of countryman Jimmy Walker (66).

Paul Casey finished with a 68 to end up seventh, ahead of Rickie Fowler (71) and Smylie Kaufman (71) โ€“ who were five under โ€“ and Harris English (72), who was a shot further back.

World number one Jordan Spieth closed with a second-straight 73 to end up at one under and tied for 17th.
