Robbie Keane in line to take player-manager role in India - Report

Atletico de Kolkata are looking to replace Teddy Sheringham, who was sacked last month.

INDIAN SUPER LEAGUE (ISL) club Atletico de Kolkata (ATK) are reportedly weighing up whether to offer Robbie Keane their managerโ€™s position until the end of the season.

Having sacked former Tottenham and Manchester United striker Teddy Sheringham last month after several disappointing results, the two-time domestic champions handed director of football Ashley Westwood the role on an interim basis.

However, under ISL rules, Westwood can only manage the club for three matches as he does not meet the criteria of a โ€˜marquee coachโ€™.

Indian media outlet Sportskeeda are reporting that ATK could give 37-year-old Keane the chance to work as player-manager for the remaining five matches of the campaign.

Irelandโ€™s all-time record goalscorer has endured a disappointing spell so far, with injuries restricting him to just six appearances โ€” and two goals โ€” since joining back in November.

The Dubliner has spoken in the past about his ambition to go into management and this could provide the first step.

ATK sit eighth in the table with 12 points from 13 matches.

See what happens when a team has belief in itself, versus a team whoโ€™s manager automatically declares the opposition are superior? Same goes for Northern Ireland โ€“ it is always 11 against 11 โ€“ if you have belief!

This is a reminder that anything can happen in football. For all the pessimists out there, this doesnโ€™t mean Sweden are nailed on for second place! I would only take hope from the game. If you had seen how incredible Germanyโ€™s performance was in the first half, and how poor Sweden were, the result is even more baffling. Main point: Any of the teams in our group could collapse at any stage. We are not the only team with problems! It is absolutely crazy to be worrying about Ireland not qualifying at this point in the group!!
