DUNDALK MIDFIELDER RICHIE Towell has been rewarded for his fine form as he was named the SSE Airtricity/Soccer Writers’ Association of Ireland Player of the Month for April today.
The 23-year-old, who wins the award for the third time, has been highly influential, scoring seven goals in five games, and helping his side go four points clear at the top of the table with a game in hand in the process.
Towell’s fine form last season caused him to be linked with a number of clubs across the water, including Cardiff City, however the player insists he is happy in Ireland.
“We had a lot of tough games during the month so I’m delighted,” said Towell.
“It makes it more enjoyable when you’re winning and all the lads are in great form at the minute.
“It was an easy decision to stay with Dundalk. It was the only team I was going to play with if I was staying in Ireland. I’m delighted and I think it shows.
“I’m going out on the pitch full of confidence and the manager has a lot of confidence in me too and I like to think I’ve been repaying him with my performances.”
The player also praised the Dundalk squad as a whole, pointing to its impressive depth.
“The competition for places this year is phenomenal. When you look at the lads like Stephen O’Donnell, he’s our captain and he hasn’t been getting into the side.
“I’m sure it’s tough for the lads not playing at the moment but I hope they can take their chance when they get it.”
Towell overcame competition from Shamrock Rovers striker Mikey Drennan and Bohemians goalkeeper Dean Delany, who finished second and third respectively owing to their similarly eye-catching performances this month.
Surely this guy deserves his chance in one of the top leagues in Europe and maybe even an Ireland call up.
Fair play to him, the glory always goes to the goal scorer, but I think shields is the real diamond in that midfield
Well done Richie ,a class act on and off the field and deserves a call up without having to play in a different league. Probably has more goals scored in the first 12 matches of the season than some of our international midfielders have in their careers.
Martin O Neill should really take a look at this lad.
