'It was the proudest moment of my career by a long way' - Keogh

The Derby County defender captained Ireland as they overcame Oman with a 2-0 win.

HAVING SCORED TWO goals from set-pieces in tonightโ€™s win over Oman, Irelandโ€™s stand-in captain Richard Keogh believes it is part of the game they can benefit from more.

The Derby County defender, who led the team out for the first time at the Aviva Stadium, had a hand in Irelandโ€™s second goal with a flick-on from Robbie Bradyโ€™s corner into the path of goalscorer Alex Pearce after Kevin Doyle had headed home the opener โ€” also from a Brady corner.

The Boys in Green head off to Tbilisi for Sundayโ€™s Euro 2016 opener with Georgia and Keogh was satisfied with the performance in their final warm-up.

โ€œThe gaffer said it before that he wants us to score a few more from set plays because they can define games,โ€ the 28-year-old said. โ€œWeโ€™re looking a threat from set plays and weโ€™ve got great delivery in our squad. Weโ€™ve got to make sure that we defend them right and score a few.

Defensively as a team I thought we were very disciplined. In the second half we won a lot more tackles and our quality shone through in the end.

โ€œThe most important thing for us was to stay concentrated as they had a couple of good players but overall it was a good night.โ€

Hoping to impress in the absence of John Oโ€™Shea and Marc Wilson, Keogh was solid in defence and called it the โ€œproudest momentโ€ of his career.

โ€œIโ€™m over the moon really, it couldnโ€™t have gone any better,โ€ he added.

โ€œItโ€™s the proudest moment of my career by a long way and when the gaffer said I was going to be captain I was lost for words really. Walking out onto that pitch is something that I will remember forever and I thank him for that.โ€

Job done! Doyle, Pearce ensure that Ireland warm up with a win

Oโ€™Neill: Some players definitely needed this game

Thatโ€™s shocking to be honest. He shouldnโ€™t have went to Thailand if he was going meeting up with the international team.. I didnโ€™t even know he was Jamaican

I Believe it was a tour for the owners who are from there. But I agree with you general.

If heโ€™s too tired to play now how will he cope with the extra games next season. Leicster may want to sign a couple new center backs. Huth and Morgan are both in their 30s and whoโ€™s the current back up?
