MAN UNITED LEGEND Peter Schmeichel has backed under-fire manager David Moyes to turn the situation around at the Premier League side, even if it takes time to do.
The retired Danish goalkeeper won five league titles at the Manchester club under Alex Ferguson, as well a Champions League and nine other trophies. The 50-year-old understands what goes into making a successful manager, and likes what he has seen in Moyes.
“I think David Moyes is a great choice,” Schmeichel told Sky Sports. “He’s shown he’s got the pedigree, he’s got the ability. He can stay in a place for a very long time, he’s shown that with Everton. At Manchester United, we want our managers to stay for a very long time.
We want consistency. This year is going to be really, really tough on him. There’s a lot of questions going to be asked from now and all the way to the end of the season, possibly going into next season.
“But he will learn a lot about himself, everyone will learn a lot about him and he will come out a lot stronger and a lot more knowledgeable.”
Onus on the players
Following the 2-0 defeat to Olympiakos in the Champions League, Moyes has come under even more intense pressure, but Schmeichel is of the opinion that the players must take their fair share of the blame.
With United currently sitting seventh in the league, the Dane says Moyes will need to get rid of the deadwood in his squad ahead of next season if he is to prove successful in the longer-term.
I think he needs to sign players, for sure. How many? I don’t know. But I think equally as importantly, he needs to offload a lot of players. There’s a lot of players there that I’m very, very disappointed with, because to be a Manchester United player, that carries a responsibility.
“You fight, you never give in, even on days it’s not happening for you, you still try. I’ve seen, throughout this season, players who haven’t done that and that disappoints me. It should disappoint everybody.
“So I think this is one of the things David Moyes has learned; who he can trust and who he can’t trust. I think this summer you will see a lot of players leave Manchester United.”
Do you agree with Schmeichel? Is United’s bad form down to the players?
Rafael, Evans, Smalling, Jones, Vidic, Ferdinand, Buttner, Lindegaard, Giggs, Valencia, Fletcher, Cleverly, Nani, Anderson, Bébé, Macheda and Young.
They are not good enough and should be gotten rid of from the club.
Smalling has potential but needs to be played centre back
The 1st 4 are good enough. We need a squad. The 99 team had players like johnsen, blomqvist, butt, May and p Neville. Not first choice players but great squad members
And Fletcher
Personaly like Phil Jones, has lot of potential once matures and most forget he only 21 or just turned 22 !!! But the rest should be sold or laid out to pasture.
Carrick is dirt
Agreed, jones and smalling at cb can work still 22/23.. Jones has heart
Schmeichel has just joined a growing list of people to point out the obvious.
I think Alex Ferguson saw what was coming down the tracks and bailed. The current squad of players leave a lot to be desired and most of them won’t be going down in the annals as United legends.
It’s the coaching staff that need overhauling. Out with Steve Round and the other Everton coaches, and bring in a team and tactics that the players can respect.
How on earth can anyone say the Man United players do or don’t respect the backroom staff ……..ridiculous statement.
they’ve gone from champions to midtable in under a season with no outgoings and two very expensive signings. Something is very wrong, and looking at the way they have been playing, there seems to me no belief in the tactics at all. Between this http://www.101greatgoals.com/blog/raf-honigstein-was-told-that-david-moyes-has-lost-manchester-united-dressing-room-and-must-go-now-espn/ (sorry don’t know how to make hyperlink), Vidic leaving, Anderson’s comments and RVP essentially spitting out his dummy, I think there’s a clear picture being drawn, but each to his own.
Gah! Hyperlink is automatic! Now I feel ridiculous!
I accept the perceptions but that doesnt give any of us the licence to assume the team doesnt respect any of the coaches…..the fact is, the whole regime is different and naturally that takes time to adjust to.Personally i think Uniteds problem is simply quality players.
To many ex Utd players having their say, Paul Parker is another, yes it’s hasn’t been good enough this season but it was always going to be difficult to replace a man who ran a club for 26 years , constant criticism doesn’t help Moyes or the players either and only adds pressure. Give him money to invest and see where the club is at by December.
Same thing happened with Rodgers coming into Liverpool last year with the team sitting just above relegation for a good few months at the start of the season. The only thing that saved him from getting this level of scrutiny is that the bar was lower to start with for him but the team are flying now and all the players are pulling in the one direction. Moyes needs to be given a chance and certainly needs the media to get off his back. They’re unlikely to get the Champions league at this late stage without a collapse from Liverpool or Arsenal but that needs to be the aim, even a strong finish would make the summer and start of next season a lot better for them.
Really would you gives moyes money giving who he bought already can you see one percent improvement in utd since he took over also have Everton improved since he left I would say they did
The team are flying now?? How ?
Cats Everton are in the same place they were this time last season
a great choice? he’s got pedigree? he’s shown ability? I no peter is a legend but he’s talking shite, if consistency is all united are lookin for I’m available at a decent price, I will agree wit d clear out id love to hand sum of those over rated bums their p45s
thank you captain obvious!
