IT WAS ALREADY into the wee hours of the morning by the time Paul OโConnell made it down to the interview area in the bowels of Stade de France.
The Ireland team bus was nearly ready to go but the Ireland forwards coach kept them waiting a few more minutes as he tried to make sense of the nerve-wracking and ultimately gut-wrenching events of Saturday night.
And really, like the rest of us, OโConnell found it hard to neatly sum up a thrilling match that ended with a familiar outcome for Irish rugby. Ireland will have to watch the semi-finals from back home, with Farrellโs men flying from Paris to Dublin today, after coming up just short in their thrilling quarter-final against New Zealand.
โJust disappointed,โ said OโConnell.
โGoing 13-0 down was frustrating and then I felt when we did have the ball and we did get field position I felt we could score, I didnโt think weโd struggle to score.
โSo, itโs just 13-0โฆ even though we managed to mount it, youโd rather be accumulating scores without them having 13 on the board already.
โA few parts of the game were frustrating. Disappointing that they stole two lineouts clean but one of the ones they swatted they actually got the field position off that and scored the [second] try.
โI know itโs an old clichรฉ, small margins, but New Zealand are a good side and itโs not like we needed everything to go our way. Itโs not like that in rugby, thereโs rarely a game that goes your way, but thereโs one or two things more tonight that didnโt go our way and that gave us a mountain to climb.โ
While Ireland had an excellent lineout performance against Scotland in their final pool game, they coughed up some key platforms in the win over South Africa and had a few stutters in this defeat to the Kiwis. That tends to happen against the best defensive lineouts.
โI think we lost three,โ said OโConnell when asked if there had been a recurring theme.
โTheyโre a good defensive lineout, New Zealand. I think we have the best defensive lineout, they might be the second-best. They guessed right on two of them. They didnโt really hurt us that much but then they got a hand to another one which got spilled and then they got the field position and scored a try off that.
โSo that was frustrating. There were a lot of very good things in our lineout tonight but weโll look back on those three and regret them for a while maybe.โ
Irish emotions ran high at the final whistle as Johnny Sexton bid farewell to the brilliant travelling support with his son, Luca, by his side.
Keith Earlsโ time with Ireland also drew to a close, while head coach Andy Farrell acknowledged that this was the end of an era.
There was an emotional scene just before the game too, with Irelandโs players forming a figure of eight when they faced the haka in memory of the late Anthony Foley, two days before the seventh anniversary of his death.
โThe players decided,โ said OโConnell of that gesture. โTheyโd all be very conscious of Anthony, the Munster lads and Pete [O'Mahony] in particular would be very conscious. Around this time of year in October, it all comes to our mind a little bit.
โIt was the playersโ idea and as coaches we were delighted because their thing is they want to inspire the nation, they want to have respect for the people who have gone before them as well.
โI think people will have identified what they did, enjoyed it, and it would have been good for Anthonyโs family as well.
โA lot of these guys are unbelievably professional, but they like a bit of old school as well. They like looking back on the old players, things like that. So, itโs a lovely mark of respect for Anthony that they did that today.โ
OโConnell does believe that Irelandโs players managed to inspire people back home during this World Cup, despite the quarter-final exit.
โI think they have. Iโd say theyโre probably feeling like theyโve let everyone down now, you know, but they love the connection with the supporters, they love that almost more than winning I think.
โAnd weโve generally won on the back of it. Itโs something that means a lot to them and that theyโve really enjoyed. So itโs just a pity in this important competition that we couldnโt kick on and create a bit of history along with it.โ
And before he departed for the waiting team bus, OโConnell stated his belief that the future is bright even if there are some legendary figures moving on.
โTheyโre fantastic and we get them really well coached, thatโs the thing,โ said OโConnell of the younger Irish players.
โI think weโve done a good job with the players, but the coaching at academy level is so well done, great coaching at U20s level, and then in the provinces as well.
โWe manage to do a lot of good work on the back of what goes on in the provinces and the way professional rugby in the IRFU is run.โ
Liverpool will win with ease.
You won the village idiot award of the day already.
I donโt remember that.
You won a cuckoo clock
Nice to see Mata start again ahead of Lingard people will moan about Fellaini but was good in last two rounds.. My biggest worry is a sending off for him.
Do you think Mata will be gone next year if Jose shows up? I hope not.
Bleedin FA cup is turning into Super Bowl
Itโs sad United used to win league titles and the champions leagueโฆ.they are happy trying to get 4th every season and winning the FA cup. Paul Scholes was right United have turned into Arsenal. #eraisover
Donโt worry donโt cry..
Itโs been three season since United won last, get over yourself. No-one can stay at the top forever.
What makes you say they are happy. United fans are furious at the drop in form over the last 4 years
Classic clattenburg cock up there, how is he considered the best ref right now?
Ya heโs a disgrace, bottled sending cabaye and Delaney off. Going out to injury players is an utter disgrace . He had no problem throwing around yellows cards for hand bags but ignores leg breakers.
Palace will feel very aggrieved with that decision. Poor refereeing from Clattenberg.
You pop up infrequently but ref decisions go for or against in every game. Reality is United fans would prefer 4th over FA, just like Liverpool. Ye will do well under Klopp and you know that.
Cโmon Palace!
Haha GGMU
Scottish Cup Final 3-2 Hibernian beat Rangers, one of the best games of football I have seen for years even considering it was Scottish football
The pitch invasion after was even betterโฆ.hup the Hibees!
Disallowed goal. Answers on a postcard please.
Pardew should have a good interview if they loseโฆ.
Iโm hoping for a 2-1 win for United. I canโt see Palace making it as comfortable for United as they did at Old Trafford in April.
Martin Keown is the worst commentator
Ever !
Woohoo. Deserved win.
United are so boring to watch. Awful first half from a neutral perspective
From a neutral point of view I was looking forward to both games today. Scottish cup was brilliant, this has been really poor. Clattenberg is a wab.
Commiserations to Crystal Palace. Worthy finalists, and it could have gone either way. Congrats to Man United.
Please not another 30 mins.. #Dire
Do you not realise that you can change the channel.
Get in thereeeeeeeeee !!!!!
Ah christ Fellaini starts :-(
At least heโs not playing as a striker or attacking midโฆ
Heโs good for a few peoples elbows.
Heโll properly score then
LVG OUT.
#Moyes in.
He gone now
Expect Man Utd to win, LvG did steady the ship towards the end and looked better, just do not know which Palace team will show upโฆโฆ
How did he? They fooked fourth place awayโฆ
A top 4 finished was thrown away long before the last few games , that last few just made it still mathematically possible
4th was being fooked away by Man Cityโฆ You do actually follow what happens, right?
They fooked away a lot more then fourth place, you do actually follow what happens?
So, you gave up on your original comment? You do follow what you are saying, right?
How am I!!? Utd did fook away fourth place but previously city fooked away any chance they had of winning the league. So again, do you follow it at all??
Fooking hell lads
He properly saw van Goals tactics
PUNCHEON!!!!!
Great win for Hibs!
Damian Delaney was outstanding.Martin OโNeill, please ask Damian to play for Ireland, ignore Keane, he wonโt refuse.
Itโs o Neill that has the problem with him
I was of the option that Delaney had a problem with Keane since Ipswitch.
Ya he did have a falling out with Keane at Ipswich, but he was asked about it before and saidโ its not Roy who had the problem with me at all โ. There was talk that he would only come back if he was guaranteed a start. O Neill told him where to go
Will take it and be glad of a cup. Springboard for better things hopefully.
What sort of a dirtbag , takes off his club shirt and throws it on the ground after scoring, the mind boggles .
Yours would !
โฆโฆ.
disgraceful scenes.
oops wrong article
Just some prlck lads, move along.
Well done to Palace , a great game best final in years
It was a terrible game. What you talking about Willis
Someone tell who the second commentator on TV3 is!! Itโs driving me mad
Welsh hippy we did enjoy that .
Great win , great week for United fans
Yeaaaaaaaaaahhhhhh
Years ago winning the fa cup meant something unfortunately not nowadaysโฆ
Fellaini for man of the match!
