Dunne gets off to flying start as Race to Dubai hots up, Lowry enjoys solid first round

After day one of the DP World Tour Championship, Patrick Reed sits top of the leaderboard.

BRITISH MASTERS CHAMPION Paul Dunne has started strongly at this weekโ€™s DP World Tour Championship in Dubai.

The Greystones golfer carded a five-under-par 67 at Jumeirah Golf Estates to sit among the chasing pack after the first round.

Only Justin Rose and Scott Hend, who both shot 66, are better-positioned behind leader Patrick Reed (-7).

While Rory McIlroy is not involved โ€” having withdrawn to recover from a rib injury โ€” Irelandโ€™s Shane Lowry has begun well with a 69.

After a remarkable season, 24-year-old Dunne was 15th in the Race to Dubai rankings heading into the final event and he will be hoping to force his way into the top 10 in order to pick up a share of the $5 million bonus.

English pair Tommy Fleetwood, currently on one-over, and Rose are battling it out with Spainโ€™s Sergio Garcia to be crowned European number one. Fleetwood simply needs to match or better Roseโ€™s score in Dubai, but the 2013 US Open winner is in the driving seat after 18 holes.

Typical Beckham soaking up the limelight and giving us tears, Scholes gets subbed last week in his final game after a greater career and just jogs off, no fuss

It shows how popular he is and how well he is respected by his peers. He won leagues wherever he went, no coincidence. A great professional.

In fairness, while not the most gifted player, he made the most of what he had both on and off the field. Not the first footballer to use his image well, but brought the marketing of footballers and their clubs to a whole new level. Football is a business whether we like it or not, ad this guy is good for business.

Send off a bit OTT, but he helped pave the way for making his teammates a lot of money from endorsements, put more emphasis on Ligue 1 and PSG. Crowd appreciate that too.

I hear he says he is still available for England if they need him , in his high pitched voice โ€œI can never retire from England I love my country โ€œ
