Harrington's Scottish Open challenge goes up in smoke with nightmare 79

Paul Dunne in the mix ahead of Sunday’s final round, three shots off the lead.

PÁDRAIG HARRINGTON WILL start the final day of the Scottish Open seven shots off the lead after a disastrous third round at Dundonald Links.

After two brilliant opening rounds on Thursday and Friday, Harrington held a share of the lead at the halfway point, but was blown away in the windy conditions on Saturday.

His seven-over par 79 included six bogeys and a double-bogey, with just a single birdie by way of consolation.

It effectively ends any hopes the three-time Major winner had of challenging for the €1 million first prize, and he will start Sunday’s final round well adrift of leaders Ian Poulter, Callum Shinkwin and Andrew Dodt.

Instead, the Irish challenge will be spearheaded by Paul Dunne who played his way up the leaderboard into a share of fifth place with a 69 on Saturday.

Dunne opened with back-to-back bogeys but quickly found his feet and carded six birdies on his way to a three-under par round, and six-under for the tournament.

He’ll play alongside a familiar face on Sunday, teeing up in the fourth-last group with Graeme McDowell, who is a shot further back on five-under.

– An earlier version of this article incorrectly stated that Harrington had five bogeys and a double bogey in his third round; he had six bogeys and a double bogey.

@Andrew Tuite: He’ll be working for Groenewegen’s leadout which diminishes his chances. Also his first GT…but he’s a huge talent, bigger surprises have happened…
