OWEN FARRELL ADMITS he was โnervousโ over conversations about his wish to leave Saracens as the Gallagher Premiership club confirmed his departure.
French club Racing 92 announced last month Farrell will link up with them from 1 July on a two-year deal, making him ineligible for England selection as Rugby Football Union rules do not permit players who ply their trade abroad to be chosen for the national team.
Farrell, 32, had already announced that he would miss this seasonโs Guinness Six Nations in order to prioritise his and his familyโs mental well-being.
Saracens said in a statement on Wednesday the โmost important thingโ is for Farrell to put himself and his familyโs well-being first and that they would be announcing several ways to honour the player before his departure.
โItโs tough leaving a place that has been my home since I was 14,โ Farrell said in an interview published on the Saracens X account, formerly Twitter.
โIt has been a difficult decision but it is an exciting one for our family. It has never been something we have thought about before, doing anything different.
โBut for the first time ever we thought it would be good to go and experience something different and the time feels right.
โI was nervous about having some conversations, even bringing it up, because itโs never been thought about, let alone discussed before.
โBut once we got into the conversations they were easy to have because of the calibre of the people here.
โThe club have been fantastic with us throughout this year and it really counts for something when they care about nothing but the person.โ
Farrell has won six Premiership titles and three European Champions Cups at Saracens and is in line to make his 250th appearance for the club next month.
He has won 112 Test caps, led his country in the last two World Cup campaigns and is Englandโs record international points-scorer.
Farrell said: โI want to enjoy the rest of this year. We talked about it at the end of last year but we want to do as well as we possibly can.
โIt has never been taken for granted playing for this club. People stay here for a long time, as a lot of us have.
โGoing in to the back end of the year we are looking to make it the best we can. I canโt wait to enjoy that over the coming months.โ

Good on him. He still in the prime of his life. Itโs always easier to make those changes when you have the capability to do so. I hope he really has a good time and enjoys it. The top 14 is a great league with lots of exciting rugby. France is not a bad place to live either.
@Con Cussed: Heโll be fine with Stuart Lancaster. Henry Arundell flying there.
Iโm glad for him.
Bet the aul lad encouraged him to mind his mind and his family. Rightly.
He will thrive in France. One of the most physical out halves to ever play the game
He was never nervous about playing the sly, sneaky game that was his trademark!! He got off with loads just because he was captain or because he was scoring!!
@Ollie Fitzpatrick: like sexton?
@Patrick OโSullivan: Nah, ye Munster men must look for a grant to get that chip off your shoulderโฆ..hold on there a minuteโฆโฆitโs not a chip itโs an effin cross!!!
@Ollie Fitzpatrick: says the guy who slates Owen farrell for the exact things opposing fans could slate sexton for and then ye start pointing fingers after like your a victim. Would love to think modern fans such as yourself are just the down side to having a successful team but na your a special case altogether.
I dare say his leaving has ensured Sextons points scoring record in the 6nations will be there for a while. He was the only one close
