JOHN O’NEILL HAS resigned from his role as Fermanagh boss, it has been confirmed.
The decision follows a difficult year for Fermanagh in which their Championship campaign encompassed embarrassing losses to both Derry and London, while several players made themselves unavailable for selection amid the turmoil.
The decision will be seen as somewhat of a surprise, given that the county board had previously backed O’Neill.
However, GaelicLife.com reports that an Independent Review panel, led by Jarlath Burns, recommended that he should resign.
The report also suggested that a number of figures, who were believed to be working against O’Neill behind the scenes, had a negative impact on the team.
A statement from the Fermanagh County Board, released following O’Neill’s resignation, read as follows:
“CLG Fhear Manach would like to extend gratitude and appreciation to John O’Neill and his backroom team for their work with the county panel throughout what was a difficult year for gaelic football in Fermanagh.”
Fermanagh will now look to establish a committee to recruit the new manager.
