BRIAN OโDRISCOLL IS ready for part two of his season-long farewell to Irish rugby, but heโs well aware of the challenges that will follow once he steps outside of his Leinster squad.
Against Edinburgh in the RDS this weekend, OโDriscoll will play what, he hopes, will be his third last match with the Leinster harp on his chest.
Post-match the province he has served for 15 years plan to give himself and captain Leo Cullen a fitting send-off so as not to distract from the bigger challenges ahead in the Pro12 semi-final and potential final.
Heโs not complaining about the attention, but he continues to be a little embarrassed by the fanfare and the countdown that surrounds his every game.
โIt doesnโt bother me too much, Iโd say everyone else is fed up of it,โ OโDriscoll said at Leinsterโs UCD base today.
โItโll be hardโ
โThatโs what happens when you get asked a question back in September or October and I gave an honest answer rather than dragging it out. I was honest and so begins the long goodbye.โ
For now, he is fully focused on the few fixtures ahead, whoever they should be against, but he has also earmarked exactly how he wants to plug out from the world of professional rugby.
โItโll be hard. Thatโs why during the summer I plan on taking a few months completely off, just getting used to not being a rugby player and seeing what it feels like to be totally out of a team environment.
โLeo [Cullen] will have his four or five week holiday โ knowing him he probably wonโt even take the whole lot and come back early โ and get stuck into things. Iโm going to take a complete break.โ
OโDriscoll briefly pricked the ears of every listening journalist when he suggested that there had been โdiscussions about some involvement in the clubโ in future. However, he soon corrected the record, saying there had been no formal talk of a future role, but that he is struggling to imagine life without any association with the eastern province.
โThis is your bread and butter. Youโve got a lot of very close friends in your province. Yes you develop friendships in the national setup โ here; weโre together the rest of the time too.
โWe have the same holiday time, we often holiday together, we have the same days off and meet up for lunch together. We spend a lot of time in each otherโs pockets so we really get a chance to know each other.
โYes, there are a lot of colleagues, but also a lot of friends here. Some have gone to pastures new, but plenty will remain here beyond me.
โItโll be hard to leave all that behind but itโs part and parcel of what we do.โ
Think i am next in line for a call up at this stage
Probably do a better job!
Lump on montenegro they are even money..we have no chance
Makes no sense playing an international friendly this time of year
Our first competitive match is September I thought, we need to play something
does it clash with your precious English league?
Nip down the Astro and grab a few lads
This doesnโt come as a surprise to me, what professional is going to line up for an international friendly against a fairly rough Serb side a couple of days before his club season begins. Only the FAI would be stupid to schedule it for then .Im sure players like Hoolahan and Pilkington want to play for Ireland but I wouldnโt be surprised if the Norwich team doctor or Paul lambert have had a little word as well, and who could blame them?
Iโm pretty sure Paul Lambert wonโt mind as heโs at Villa nowโฆ.
ah why would paul lambert talk to norwich players??
Iโll get my coatโฆโฆ..
jesus a dislike for asking thatโฆโฆ
lol
non event
with playing our first qualifier in September for the next campaign, this is far from a non event. trap has to try something new after the slaying he got because of the euros.
Just before the kick off of the season of course the clubs are going to do a sick note for the players.Silly time for friendlies.
How do you replace a whole team/organisation.
Trapโs policy of not blooding new players has come back to haunt him. He refused to introduce young players into games in the past. Now that he has lost some of his core team we have a very inexperienced squad.. Itโs hard to blame the younger players for not being enthusiastic about playing for him after their previous treatment. I have to agree with the criticism about the timing of the game. This a money making venture for the FAI and has no consideration for players or their clubs?
Think your going to get a lot of this over the next couple of years have a feeling a lot of players might not want to play under trap
Once again Delaney and Co, make a mess, with just days before the start of a new English season he has a friendly, just to try make a few bob to cover his and Trapps wages.
In the words of the great Gnarls Barkley โwho cares?โ
