ULSTER HAVE CONFIRMED Neil Doak as their new head coach, with Les Kiss to join the province as full-time Director of Rugby following the 2015 Rugby World Cup.
The province have been without a head coach since Mark Anscombe departed during the summer months, while Kiss has been in an interim role as Director of Rugby in recent months.
The Australian returns to his role as Ireland defence coach under Joe Schmidt from next week, meaning Doak will take charge exclusively in his new position as head coach.
The 42-year-old has been coaching with Ulster since his retirement from playing in 2005, beginning with the provinceโs underage sides before working his way into an assistant coach role with the senior set-up.
His work on the provinceโs attack and backline has won him the support of the squadโs players, and his appointment is likely to be extremely popular with the provinceโs leadership group.
Kiss now moves his focus solely to the national team once again, but has agreed to return to Ulster in a full-time role as Director of Rugby at the conclusion of Irelandโs World Cup campaign next season.
Ulster CEO Shane Logan and his board have extensively reviewed the DOR model in recent months following the shock loss of David Humphreys to Gloucester in June, but have decided to continue with the role from 2015 onwards.
I am very appreciative of the continued faith the IRFU and Ulster Rugby have demonstrated in me and, while Iโm delighted to get the security in the long term, I am very much focused first and foremost on the next 12 months,โ said Kiss.
โItโs exciting that the Springboks arrive here in just over 3 weeks and that the Guinness Series is almost upon us. The national coaching team have remained in close contact and Joe has been particularly supportive of my dual roles over the last few months, which has made things a lot easier for me.โ
Meanwhile, Ireland head coach Joe Schmidt reacted positively to the plans:
โLes is tremendous value and his integrity, coaching ability and positivity will add definite value to Ulster in the long term.
โBut, like the rest of the national coaching team, we are both very much focused on the upcoming Guinness Series. Beyond that there are plenty of challenges leading up to Six Nations and RWC 2015.โ
As ever, the IRFUโs performance director David Nucifora was a man of few words, but summed up the appointment simply: โLes and Neil are an ideal fit for Ulster. โ
Fantastic!
Irelandโs plans wonโt be unduly interrupted and Ulster are FINALLY getting a world class coach/ DOR to lead them.
Good news for Ireland, Ulster and Les Kiss!
Letโs just hope we can guide our way through this season without imploding due to the power vacuum at the top!
And there it is, a power vaccum!
Hope Les and Neil can bring home some silverware. Having attended the European cup at Lansdowne in 1999, ulster fans really need success of that magnitude.
Hopefully Les can give the team the Kiss of life if youโll pardon the pun
No. It will not be pardoned. What were you thinking? Did you not think of the children? The children!
Does this mean that Ireland will be getting a new defence coach after the World Cup?
I assume that means Kiss is leaving the national set up, which would be a shame as heโs been a quality coach for the team. Ulster fans will be very happy with this appointment, Iโd imagine.
On the other hand, if he stays part of the Irish set up next season, Iโd be a little uncomfortable. The problem would remain that he would have direct access to key performance indicators and player data from his provincial rivals, which may lead to a certain level of distrust between the teams. The temptation would be there for Foley, Lam and OโConnor to draw the curtains, something that could be harmful to the Irish set up.
Youโre presuming Kiss would be dishonest enough to poach information. Sound.
Okay. Reading over the comment it sounds rather accusatory. I donโt think there is anything malicious in his appointment or anything.
When I say Ulster fans will be happy it is solely because Kiss is a great coach.
Iโm saying that if he is part of the Irish set up in the 2014-15 season I would expect him to be seeing these stats while making game plans with Schmidt, not stealing them or anything. I also expect Simon Easterby and others to see this kind of thing.
