ANDY MURRAY HAS won gold for Great Britain in the menโs tennis final at Wimbledon, beating Roger Federer in straight sets in front of a packed Centre Court.
Murray won 6-2 6-1 6-4 against the man that beat him in the Wimbledon final earlier this summer.
The 25-year-old from Dunblane said afterwards that the victory was the biggest of his career as he totally outclassed the world number one.
It was clear from early in the first set that Murray was the fresher of the two players โ he broke serve in game six and held for 5-2 with two brilliant aces, before burying a backhand passing shot to seal the set.
Murray broke Federerโs first service game of the second set and saved six break points to make it 3-0, and a double fault played right into Murrayโs hands, as he served out the second set with aplomb.
Chants of โMurray! Murray!โ rang out and the Scot breached Federerโs serve once again in the fifth game of the third set.
He would make no mistakes, dropping just one further point on his own serve, and sealed the gold with an ace before climbing into the stands to embrace his family.
Canโt believe the begrudgery. Iโm no great fan of his but to come back from losing Wimbledon 4 weeks ago and win gold is a super achievement. And heโs back out now in the mixed doubles final. Iโve no doubt the positivity and goodwill of the british public is driving their athletes to success. We can learn alot.
Aghhhhhh come on, of course you can believe the begrudgery. You knew when you clicked on the article exactly what the comments were going to be like!
I for one am delighted for him. Glad he sang/mouthed the anthem and ormonde street hospital got another couple of grand off Piers Morgan. Thereโs a great atmosphere around the olympics and iโm glad team GB are doing well.
Fair play to him and well done, seems like a nice guy!
Well done Andy! Hopefully heโll build on this victory and win the U.S. Open!
Does that mean heโs British today? Next game he loses heโll be back to being Scottishโฆ.
Too true
Too trueโฆI could not agree more
I only watched a bit of it but from what I saw it seemed like RF didnโt even want to play.
Weโre you watching the break in between? I watched the whole thing and RF tried his best buy today it wasnโt good enough. Murray deserved it.
Hey Andy. How many grand slam titles have you won? Oh wait I forgot you won None. ahahahahahaha
However he does have an olympic gold medal, so you can get back to popping your spots in the mirror as i can only assume that you are just hitting puberty judging by your comment.
How many slam titles have you won? Please enlighten us.
Eoghan. I think that is one of the finest bitch slaps I have seen in a while. Tip top
Heโs won the same amount of Grand Slams as Westmeath have won All-Irelands.
Jealously is a most unattractive trait!
Arsehole of the highest orderโฆ
Great to see a Scot sing โ God save our Queenโ
Moving your lips is hardly singing, and judging by Murrays history in the matter i wouldnt get too excited. But this is not about politics, its about sports and a great sportsman at that!
What a useless comment
And now a silver for the mixed doubles on the same day! Respect Andy!
Fair play to him. He comes across as a sound skin so Iโm delighted for him .
I do not understand how professional tennis players can play in the โsupposedlyโ amateur Olympics.
They havenโt really been โamateurโ for a long long time. Take out all the athletes who are in any way professional and you wouldnโt have much of an Olympics left.
Ps well done to Murray.
Most Olympian are still very amateur and struggling to get by. My own view is these tennis players and the pro soccer players shouldnโt be in the Olympics. They have their own big tournaments. I donโt think itโs in the Olympic spirit for Federer to fly in his own private jet to compete in the Olympics.
Should be like the boxing, for amateurs but as soon as you turn pro, thatโs it.
Great for Andy, great respect for his strength of mind and perseverance..
Down the Begrudgers.!!!
Happy for them
The only reason Murray won a Gold Medal is because Rafa Nadal wasnt in the tournament.
He can only beat who turns up!
Amazing how he always chokes at Wimbledon yet can win a title a few weeks later played at same venue against pretty much the same opponents.
And its weird how the BBC never mention the word โWimbledonโ during d Olympic reports that refer to it as the โtennis venueโ which is wimbledonโฆkinda like a weird paradym shift..
โYou can only beat who gets turns up.โ He beat Novak Djokivic in the semi-final which was amazing in itself. You could see Andy was really, really up for it throughout the tournament. Well done, Andy!
Is that a Freudian slip in the first line? Surely Andy Murray hasnโt won Wimbledon or have I missed something?
*โwho gets turns upโ! โwho turns upโ even. Typo gremlins.
@Niall Perry and Sean Slevin
I agree with you both. As a not-a-great-sports-fan, I had, until this year, thought that the Olympics paid, at least, lip service to the Amateur Ideal.
