FOOTBALL PLAYERS HAVE become less mature over the last 10 years, according to Jose Mourinho, who believes they put themselves into bad surroundings.
The Portuguese has been involved in coaching for over 20 years, a career which has seen him work alongside many incredible players as he won titles at Porto, Chelsea, Inter and Real Madrid.
Now at Manchester United hoping to lead the club back to the pinnacle of English and European football, Mourinho sees some key flaws in the attitudes of his players, insisting the kind of young professionals he worked with when he first turned up at Stamford Bridge in 2004 are just not there.
โI had to adapt to a new world. To what young players are now,โ he told France Football.
I had to understand the difference between working with a boy like Frank Lampard, who, at the age of 23 was already a man, who thought football, work, professionalism, and the new boys who at the age of 23 are kids.
โToday I call them โboysโ not โmenโ. Because I think that they are brats and that everything that surrounds them does not help them in their life nor in my work.
I had to adjust to all that. Ten years ago, no player had a mobile phone in the dressing room. That is no longer the case.
โBut you have to go with it because if you fight that, you are bringing about conflict and you put yourself in the stone age.โ
The 54-year-old says he has a better understanding of young players now and feels doing so is key to bringing out the best of them.
If you stop a player from doing something, even something a little stupid on social media, you are going against nature,โ he added.
โI admit that having a son and a daughter at that sort of age has helped me to understand the way they function and what the world is today.
I measured, from a methodological point of view, the nature of change. I worked as a result with my assistants to better, modify and adapt our work.
โTechnology has given us new tools. Modernity and science too. But the key to everything, in terms of the leadership aspect, is to understand the people that you are working with today.โ

Good to see Sammy putting in good performances. He could turn out to be an excellent Internation too. Great to see strength and depth at centre in Munster too, Scannel, Farrel, Taute, Arnold and even Goggins.
It would be nice to see some Munster developed players break into the national team, and stay there. It has been a long time since Conor Murray and Simon Zebo did so. There are a number of players in the background but they really need to start producing more for Ireland.
@grandslamkbo: OโMahony? I agree that we could do with more lads breaking in for regular games but thereโs such a log jam of Leinster playersโฆ
@EnKy: POM, of course. My error, I meant backs. No reason to drag thinly veiled hostility towards Leinster in this. What Munster-developed players do you think are being unfairly kept out of the first team or regular squad positions for Leinster players? As an Irish supporter, I want to see the best for the national team. Every team has to do their part.
@grandslamkbo: last weekend there were 3 Leinster starters, 2 โ munster, 1 Connacht and 1 Ulster. For the next match itโll be 3 munster, 2 Leinster, 1 Connacht and 1 Ulster. Not sure how you figure munster should be doing more.
@Jim Demps: It was a pretty poor attempt at trolling
This guy has got some serious acceleration.
The abuse joe get and yet the work he puts into these younger players and bringing them through slowly but making sure each part of the foundation is rock solid. Those who buy into this learning set up and do the required work will become far better players for us in the medium and long term.
@Chris Mc: where you seeing all this abuse for Joe?
@Jim Demps: Ahhhh cโmon nowโฆ Even Ive hurled the odd bit of abuse at him. And i think heโs flippin great.
The criticism from fans is constant. No matter what he does there will be those who think he shouldve done differently. Thatโs just the territory of being a head coach. Everyone has an opinion, so no matter what choice Schmidt makes, someone will disagree
@Jim Demps: I just made it up
@Rudiger McMonihan: ya ur probably right. Iโm always dumbfounded that he goes with toner.
Fine player with a big future ahead for Munster and Ireland.
