MEATH GAA HAS announced that a member of their public relations team has “accepted responsibility” for posting an offensive tweet aimed at the facilities in Down’s Ballycran.
The public relations team member in question is no longer part of the team following an investigation into the matter.
The tweet was published in the aftermath of the Allianz hurling Division 2A clash of Offaly and Down in the Ballycran club, which Offaly won by 0-21 to 0-18.
Down manager Ronan Sheehan expressed his disappointment on social media about the tweet which mocked the facilities in Ballycran. The tweet has since been deleted.
Meath GAA subsequently released a statement which said that the “ tweet in no way reflects the views of Coiste na Mí C.L.G,” and that a “full investigation” into the matter would follow. The statement added that contact had been made with the Down county board to apologise for the tweet.
Earlier today, the Royals published another statement revealing that the investigation has been concluded.
“Following an investigation in relation to an offensive tweet posted on the Meath GAA Twitter account, a member of the Public Relations team has this morning accepted responsibility for posting the tweet.
“Coiste na Mí C.L.G. can confirm that this person is no longer a member of the Public Relations team.
“We apologise once again for the offence caused by the tweet.”

I have two questions, much of this debate is being carried out without being able to find what exactly was said, so what was actually said?, and most importantly, is McKenna park a kip? It might not be a venue befitting an inter county game, and in that instance I think the original tweet was in some way justified, but that also hasn’t really been addressed. Someone has lost their position over what potentially was a reasonably fair statement. It also may have been totally off the mark, but in all I’ve heard on this I’ve yet to hear any of the details I would need to make my own opinion on it, which was what I thought reading a news story was supposed to achieve.
@Patrick Breen: https://www.irishexaminer.com/sport/gaa/arid-41065214.html
@Jo H: thank you that makes the whole story a lot more complete. Seems just like whoever tweeted it didn’t mean to do so as Meath GAA, but was logged into the wrong account. Anyway storm in a teacup, seems like a grand ground, but nothing hectic, I think calling it a kip wouldn’t be a million miles from the truth.
@Patrick Breen: no problem, as you say without it there isn’t much context or sense to this article
Mentioned Offaly GAA, not once, but twice
@Ollie Ryan: was a bit confused by that alright! Was wondering why a Meath official took it upon himself to comment on the grounds/pitch during an Offaly v Down game!!
They were only two weeks in the job too.
What a dumb thing to put in a tweet. OK they’re gone but you do wonder sometimes about the type of people that are in places like this. From what I have read so far, Down GAA have been very gracious in accepting the apology from Meath but if I was a Down supporter I would not be impressed.
@Tommy Bohan: Yeah, you’re right. As a Down fan, i wouldn’t be impressed. I mean, the facility is in dire need of refurbishment
@Disco Inferno: So is the navan venue pairc tailteann. Now that is KIP.. Was there on Sunday for the Clare match. Expected to sit on 50 years old, soaking wet, concrete steps. Toilet facilities archaic for men, almost non existed for women. Meath need to get their own house in order
it must be a very slow news day
