TOMÁS Ó’SÉ AND DESSIE Dolan didn’t quite know where to look on Sunday evening as former Donegal star Martin McHugh told a strange story relating to the time when Seamus McEnaney was in charge of the Monaghan footballers.
Recounting a story he was told from 2007, when Kerry beat McEnaney’s Monaghan by just a point in the All-Ireland quarter-finals, McHugh embarked on something of a ramble.
“I remember telling you a story way back,” McHugh said to host Des Cahill.
“‘Banty’ McEnaney played against Tomás’ (Kerry) team with the Monaghan team.
“They got beaten by a point and put up a good performance.
“He (McEnaney) was down in Kerry on holidays afterwards and there was this fella in the pub drinking.
“He says, that’s a good team you have there but they’re very small.
“Banty says ‘you know what you’ll do, send the Kerry women up to Monaghan.’
“Your man says ‘well, they’ll have to be pregnant before they go up!’”
Get it? We didn’t either.
A wild guess, if Monaghan wanted to improve their footballers they’d need more than just tall kerry women, that was the joke, they’d have to be pregnant by kerrymen before going to Monaghan
I got it but it wasn’t told well.
I don’t think it was that bad in fairness! The Kerryman in the pub thought it would be a pointless exercise sending a local woman up to Monaghan to produce a footballer with a local unless she was already pregnant with one with 100% Kerry genes.
Well said Mike. Congrats again on the gold medal, the pride of Portloaise!
How he’s paid to analyse anything is beyond me! He should have been given the road last season. According to his waffle last night Leitrim and smaller counties basically just need to try harder. The Nordies aren’t as passionate since the troubles ended, parents shouldn’t let their sons leave county panels and some shite about impregnating Kerry women! Added to this waffle are his comments about Gooch last season. Him and Des combined are a shambles
Here here
Did his son not leave the Donegal panel two years ago and him saying parents shouldn’t let their sons leave county panels.. As a Cavan man I’ll always love him for 97 but he’s definitely a very poor pundit.. rambles too much..
Hear hear or ‘ah here’?
Probably had a good point about other sports opening up to players from the north ( soccer but rugby in particular ) and that the cultural aspect isn’t as strong a pull. However Tyrone just won u21 all Ireland so it’s more likely just a phase they’re going through.
Certainly not getting shot on way to training must be a great incentive.
If anyone makes a point now on TV they now have to relate everything to their own county? That’s just ridiculous and reinforced this parochialism.
“I think that all players should wear helmets” -commentator.
“But didn’t his young lad not wear a helmet in last year’s quarter final” – keyboard warrior.
FFS.
Did you hear him giving out about players from Derry and the likes leaving their panels cause of a lack of passion. Must have an awful short memory…..
An awful lot of sensitive folk about. He said to just look at Donegal – I.e. We had all these issues but had a plan and are now competitive – not perfect, just competitive.
That’s some pretty good evidence in favour of long term head injury checks in the GAA right there.
how he’s getting a gig as a pundit after his cooper one trick pony howler is beyond belief.
Very bloody obvious what he meant in fairness
I thought his assertion that all teams like Leitrim needed to compete at the very top level was dedication was a lot more baffling
Completely agree, Tom. Twas absolute waffle. I was hoping some of the panel would call him out on it but they were too busy checking themselves out in the monitor. #LeitrimAbu.
Martin McPooh talking absolute pooh…..
Fairly obvious what the man was saying or trying to say. The keyboard warriors are having a field day with another Gaa personality. Paddy O Rourke yesterday McHugh today. No need to be so serious
when Sean Cavanagh decides to hang up his boots, rte should go out on a limb for him. I think he would be a top analyst.
That joke is as old as the hills
The lad drinking doesn’t trust Monaghan genes to produce big strong players like Kerry do I imagine is the moral of the story
McHugh is a tool..end of. Rubbish anecdotes and patronising comments about weaker counties is all he is capable of. Oh and does he mention he won an all ireland once???
He could do with getting back into management. Would love to see him back in Cavan.
