Mark McGovern's debt mounting daily in San Francisco

Fermanagh’s Mark McGovern, the Gaelic footballer who suffered a serious brain injury while playing in San Francisco, has amassed over $1.1m in debt over the course of his five weeks in intensive care.

HIS LIFE MAY no longer be in  danger, but Gaelic footballer Mark McGovern’s difficulties are far from over.

The Fermanagh native suffered a serious brain injury upon being struck by an opposition player during his first match for a San Francisco-based GAA club a little over a month ago. He then slipped into a coma, only to regain consciousness weeks later.

According to Irish Central’s James O’Brien, the bill for McGovern’s treatment already exceeds $1.1m, with costs only likely to increase as he begins a lengthy course of specialised treatment:

“Mark McGovern spent five weeks in San Francisco General Hospital intensive care unit in a critical condition. During this time, Mark suffered a severe bout of pneumonia along with infection from the MRSA bug. Both conditions were considered life-threatening, but… [he] overcame both and has recently started an intensive course of rehabilitation.”

The police have identified a suspect in the assault, also from Ireland, but pending legal action, the family of the inter-county star have moved to establish a charitable fund in the injured player’s name. Details can be found at www.support4markmcgovern.com.

It is one of those games where the edited highlights are better than the live game which can go on for hours. Another option is to record the game and watch it later; that way you can fast forward through all the breaks including the ads.

‘Upon further review the player hit home base. Touchdown Celtics’. This is how I think the NFL referees know about the rules
