Manchester United 3-1 Arsenal
MARCUS RASHFORDโS BRACE and a dream debut goal for Antony secured Manchester United a fourth successive victory as Premier League leaders Arsenal saw their winning start to the season ended at Old Trafford.
Deadline-day signing Antony was brought in for his debut and took just 35 minutes to open his account, with the big-money arrival from Ajax coolly dispatching a left-footed effort.
Arsenalโs Gabriel Martinelli had seen a goal ruled out by that point after VAR Lee Mason advised referee Paul Tierney to review Martin Odegaardโs challenge on man-of-the-match Christian Eriksen.
Mikel Artetaโs Gunners returned from half-time with the bit between their teeth and deservedly equalised through Bukayo Saka, only for United to strike back as Rashford was sent racing through to score.
The 24-year-old grabbed his second after former Tottenham man Eriksen teed him up in the 75th minute as United won four consecutive Premier League games for the first time since April 2021.
There was a crackling atmosphere at Old Trafford and play got off to a lively start to a backdrop of anti-Glazer chants that persisted throughout.
Eriksen volleyed narrowly wide at the far post having met a deep Diogo Dalot cross early on, while at the other end William Saliba wasted a good chance when the ball fell to him inside the box.
Jadon Sancho followed some quick footwork with a low drive that Aaron Ramsdale kept out and a frantic opening reached a crescendo in the 12th minute.
Odegaard dispossessed Eriksen and Saka put Martinelli through, with the in-form forward keeping cool under pressure to slot past David de Gea.
But Arsenalโs celebrations were brought to a halt by a VAR review, with referee Tierney ruling the goal out after going to the monitor and deeming Odegaard to have fouled Eriksen.
Antony wastefully bent wide from distance as play became broken up by fouls and periods of treatment before Arsenal had some decent chances.
Martinelli got away a low attempt from an acute angle that De Gea stopped from creeping in at the near post, then soon after produced a superb save to prevent him heading home.
Those stops provided United with the platform to take the lead.
Eriksen played through the lines to Bruno Fernandes and referee Tierney played advantage as the Portuguese had passed onto Sancho before being fouled by Gabriel.
The winger fed Rashford, whose delicate pass put Antony in to curl a left-footed strike past Ramsdale. The new boy made the most of the celebrations.
There were a few half-chances as half-time approached before Arsenal returned from the break with renewed intensity.
Gabriel Jesus found Odegaard with a cross he could not make a clean connection with and Saka rifled across the face of goal as the visitors worked another opening. Tyrell Malaciaโs attempt to stop the latter ended in penalty appeals that were ignored.
A floated Saka cross then landed on the crossbar as United remained under the cosh.
Cristiano Ronaldo came on for Antony but in the 60th minute Arsenalโs pressure told.
Having intercepted the ball, the Gunners quickly launched an attack. Odegaard slipped in Jesus, with Dalotโs tackle on him inadvertently putting the ball into Sakaโs path to strike.
It was no less than the league leaders deserved but they were only level for six minutes.
United picked up a loose pass and launched a break, with Fernandesโ excellent ball putting Rashford through to hit a drive that beat Ramsdale and rippled the back of the net in front of the Stretford End.
The Arsenal goalkeeper batted away a Fernandes chip and โ after Jesus went close at the other end โ was picking the ball out of his net again in the 75th minute.
Fernandes superbly capitalised on the visitorsโ high line with a pass that put Eriksen free, with the experienced midfielder squaring for Rashford to score his second.
It was another superb team goal that put the result to bed. Arsenal tried to reduce the deficit but their frustration was clear as United defended doggedly to the final whistle.
Caught on the hop with two counters. Frustrating. Good game of football though. Martinelli disallowed goal was harsh but Iโd be screaming for a foul if it was the other way around. Onto the next one.
@แดแดแด49: Summed up perfectly. Glad to get that call as a utd fan. Thought it was just about a foul. Prob be raging if it was other way around then.
@Johnny Mads: it was a foul lads. no other way to view it
@Arthur Pewty: it was never a foul in a million years. Total BS call. Var has completely ruined the game as a spectacle.
@kev egan: really Kev? It was 100% a foul. Whether or not it should have went to VAR is debatable but it it was definitely a foul.
@Johnny Mads: it was t the most aggressive foul but he was thrown off the ball by hands- not a shoulder. So defo was a foul
@Trevor Connolly: ya i thought in the full speed replay its a foul all day. Then in slow mo thought it was soft-ish but slow mo is always a bad representation imo.
Great win. Looking good at the moment. Eriksen is a proper baller. Wont get carried away but they have a decent squad there now.
@Brian Dunne: also a word for mctominay who has been excellent the last 4 games.
Donโt say it Rio, donโt say itโฆ.
@Brendan Byrne: brutal performance from Arsenal. Hardly had a shot on target the whole match. Made it simple for United who should easily win the PL after that.
Iโd give up all those wins for Matin Tyler to retire. He is an absolute dinosaur and he was obsessed about the left footed goals for Arsenal and donโt get me started on the โErikSonโ comment. Bring back Andy Gray.
@Gary OโRourke: what about Neville today? Was like a lifelong arsenal fan. Praising Jesus like he scored a double hat trick and saying this result makes him more sure of their top 4 credentials, as far as i can see they basically did what theyโve been doing for the last 15 years, playing some nice football but not producing when it mattered. Was a nerve racking performance from united. The disallowed goal rattled them, but they defended well. I got the feeling when arteta started throwing on attacking players theyโd be hit on the break. Hope this is the first of many good performances from Rashford. Good finish from Antony too.
@A$AP Ragnick:Haha look at all the boys coming out over a couple of wins. Anyone with a fart of a brain would see Arsenal totally dominated the game. Anyone that thinks todayโs performance gets ye back into top 4 is hilariously deluded. Enjoy the win tho.
@Seร n Pรฒl OโMaolain: thanks. Iโm not denying that they did but domination means nothing if you donโt capitalise on it. As an arsenal fan you have to admit they have had a fairly handy start, this was their first big test and they didnโt pass it. Was naive of Arteta to throw the kitchen sink at it so early.
@Seร n Pรฒl OโMaolain: What a petty comment. Absolutely no utd fans on here from what i can see are getting carried away. Arsenal were brilliant today and very unlucky but 3-1 is 3-1 and utd deserved it. Whoโs saying anything more than that? This is the best run weโve had in a while and also the most promising weโve looked in years. Results and top 4 aside, itโs a team we can finally get behind. Sorry for feeling positive.
@Seร n Pรฒl OโMaolain: who said anything about 4th. Most happy with the win. And so what if Arsenal dominated. They had over 60% of the possession but only had 3 shots on goal.
@Cormac Flanagan: pol is a pool fan, the poor lad.
@Gary OโRourke: Agreed. I cannot stand him. Most boring, monotone commentator ever.
@Johnny Mads: Arsenal were brilliant???
@James Dore: Calm James.. was just giving them some credit. They were brilliant in patches and thought game could have gone either way at times.
@Seร n Pรฒl OโMaolain: someones jimmies are rustled I think. Embarrassing comment. As itโs been said, first big test for Arsenal and they failed. Wasnโt hard to predict either
@Seร n Pรฒl OโMaolain: nonsense / as Keane said ya can take the plaudits and we will will take the points any day / everyone knows winning the game is about who scores the most goals / not the stats / even the fart brains get that fairly basic understanding of the game
@Seร n Pรฒl OโMaolain: Anyone who thinks it gets United into the top 4 would be deluded as the result puts them fifth today. Donโt know where your club allegiance lies, but likely it would be particularly telling if known especially when aomeone says โyeโ. The impartial genius that makes it clear all aspects of his or her commentary are from some perceived or histotical tension between clubs. Numpty.
@Seร n Pรฒl OโMaolain: Just saw your profile now and Iโm in hysterics. You are an Arsenal fan! Your bitterness and frustration must be through the roof! Reason and logic could never apply to your commentary. Priceless! I thought you were a fan of a team that would challenge for the title. I did not expect that one. I genuinely canโt stop laughing here.
@David Gaffney: all he needed was enough salt for a bag of chips, not a full roast with fam around
@Seร n Pรฒl OโMaolain: Look very good and comfortable in possession but they play a very high line and leave a lot of grass between the back four and their goal. Looked vulnerable defensively at time yesterday
@Seร n Pรฒl OโMaolain: mind the gap.. the looneys are going back to the asylum (hopefully for another 30 years)
@Niall Thomson: haha
Massive win,and alot more work to do, erikson on a free has been some signing. Utd get criticism for over paying (rightly so) but he has been a massive addition, so far so good for all ten hags signings. Ronaldo getting back into heโs pomp too.
@Pauly Kel: I was critical to ye of Ronaldo Thursday night but definitely saw a better side to him today. Chased everything and looked proper hungry. Great to have him IF he keeps his mentality in check around the squad and the younger players especially who are giving everything now.
Great win! United the better team for a lot of the match, but Erikson really made the difference and Ten Hag really set them up right with those substitutes solidifying them at the back. Iโll take the wins. Great for the confidence.
This is Manchester United.
Still loads to improve on but a good win. Shows how much I know as I was screaming for Rashford to be subbed. Felt Arsenal a few times over did it and were attempting to walk the ball into the net. For all there good play they only had 2/3 shots on goal.
Good day at the office
United havenโt had this many wins in a row since before Ronaldo signed
@Darren Fitzpatrick: Darren you love utd and Ronaldo we all know it.
@Pauly Kel: itโs almost like ten Haag sees what everyone else was seeing last yearโฆ
@Darren Fitzpatrick: what team are you managing..seeing and doing are two different things
@Darren Fitzpatrick: Am? Ronaldo is still there so they have and heโs played in all 4 games.
@Darren Fitzpatrick: Since Iโve sobered up this morning. This has to go down as the most thickest comment Iโve ever read.
History to Repete itself Loose the First Two Games and go on and Win The League Wat h this space
Jaysus lads , ya love to see it. That game will russle some peoples jimmies. Sadly I didnโt get to see it, but settling down now with a drink and match reaction and no doubt people whinging about United bouncing back a bitm.Lot more to do and this isnt even Ten Hags style or his own team yet. Exciting stuff, fingers crossed
Arsenal were excellent today. A real top 4 performance BUT were undone by some Eriksen brillance and Rashford finishes (whatโs seldom is wonderful). We need to learn though. Oodaguard is quality.
Has to be said, E10H seems to have cracked it. Havenโt seen Utd perform like this in a long time -
