UNITED STATES manager Gregg Berhalter has backed “fighter” Christian Pulisic to prove his worth as speculation continues over the Chelsea forward’s future.
A big-money signing from Borussia Dortmund in 2019, the 23-year-old has become frustrated at the lack of starts he is making under Thomas Tuchel.
The looming winter World Cup has sharpened Pulisic’s focus and he is reported to be of interest to a variety of clubs, from Manchester United and Newcastle to Atletico Madrid and Juventus.
The US captain could still end up staying put and Berhalter believes he will come good even if he remains with Chelsea until the tournament gets underway in Qatar.
“He’s a fighter,” the USA manager said at a Major League Soccer event. “You’re going to see. He’s going to get on the field.
“I mean, every year it’s ‘he may not be a starter’, right? Every year you hear that and every year he ends up on the field because of his contribution.
“He’s a goalscorer, he’s a winner. What I’ve seen from him in the last couple of years is his mentality has completely shifted and he embraces stuff like this.
“He’s not scared of challenges like (he has at Chelsea) and I’m excited to see how he performs this year.”
Still really miss this man. Always felt this move wouldn’t work out given the cut-throat nature of the Prem, and Chelsea largely being a club that buys and buys again, rather than giving time and instilling confidence. I guess understandable in ways.
I’ll never forget that 18/19 season. The chips were down, a disastrous game or two cost us the title in the end, but this man kept fighting at 19 years of age with cracking goals against the likes of Bremen & Düsseldorf to put us on the cusp of a Bundesliga title. Stuff like that will never be forgotten in Dortmund. Was worth the sale for the £58m, but would happily welcome his return one day, just can’t quite match his wages at the moment.
@Ultan Corcoran: a loan move to Everton might be worth a bet
@Ultan Corcoran: out of interest how did you become a Dortmund supporter?
@Derek O Connor: Fell in love with them in 2011. Without going on a rant – I started tuning in and never witnessed an atmosphere like it, football like it, and the more I started watching the league, the more I realised almost every club was similar and the morals were the same – cheap tickets, full attendances, honest attacking football, fan owned clubs, and a place where fans are put at the epicentre of the game.
Dortmund and Kaiserslautern (2.Buli side) will always be my favorites, but I’ll support any game a German side plays in really (maybe bar RB or Hoffenheim occasionally haha).
Wouldn’t hold anything against other leagues tho, would have favourite teams just not a fan of the money and these oligarchs damaging the people’s game and clubs!
This would be a good buy for United, or any top 5 team. He has been criminally underused at Chelsea.
