Limerick 1-24
Waterford 0-19
Fintan OโToole reports from Croke Park
SEVEN MONTHS ON from the golden day of success that ended their long Liam MacCarthy wait, Limerickโs hurlers hit their latest milestone this afternoon by achieving another breakthrough.
In their first league decider in 13 years, they lifted the title for the first time since 1997. It was fully merited as well, another day when they stamped their dominance on an encounter and sparkled to see off Waterford.
Aaron Gillane was the star turn with a return of 1-9, bagging 1-5 of that total from play. He has been in sublime form all spring and this was a perfect way to round off a storming personal start to 2019.
Limerickโs first-half goal was a product of ingenuity and skill. Tom Morrissey smashed in a delivery from the middle third and Gillane, who had stole in behind the covering defence, doubled it home in the air with a brilliant swipe. That 28th minute strike pushed them ahead 1-9 to 0-8 after a phase where Waterford had made considerable inroads to Limerickโs scoreboard advantage and gained a foothold in the exchanges.
Limerick exploded from the blocks early on. They chalked up eight points inside 13 minutes. Aaron Gillane supplied half of that total, his fourth score summing up the energy Limerick were displaying as Cian Lynch robbed Tadhg De Bรบrca and his Patrickswell club-mate pounced on the break to score.
Hit by that whirlwind opening, Waterford did well to steady themselves and work their way into the game. They rattled off four points without reply by the 20th minute, conceded a super score when Peter Casey was on target and then hit another brace. Ten minutes to the break and Waterford had clawed within a point. Stephen Bennett was sustaining their hopes, shooting over seven of their eight points.
But the Gillane goal spurred Limerick on as they raced ahead 1-12 to 0-10 by the interval, hitting the last three points of the half. A similar theme unfolded in the second half, Limerick surging clear any time Waterford approached.
A 1-13 to 0-11 lead in the 39th minute became a 1-16 to 0-11 advantage by the 44th minute. And when Waterford got within five again, 1-19 to 0-17 in the 64th minute, Limerick acclerated clear once more to outscore them 0-5 to 0-2 in the rest of the game. The champions stay on top.

Well done Limerick. Outstanding ambassadors for the game and county generally. Missed a lot of chances and conceded a few cheap scores so plenty to work on.
Hard luck Waterford. It will be a belting Munster hurling championship.
Iโm waiting for someone from Clare to mention again that they beat Limerick in the Championship and they tired out Galway for the final โฆ
But anyway, well done to the panel for another piece of history!
@David A Roberts: but we didโฆ
@Kevin McMahon: ye did in fairness
@David A Roberts: To be fair, beating Limerick was Clareโs All Irelandโฆ.
@Kevin McMahon: Clare are bottlers and will always be bottlers
Most overrated team in Ireland
Coming from a Kilkenny supporter
At the game. Very poor competition this year in NHL. Iโd say the league and championship will need to be combined in some way as too much shadow boxing now in hurling league. Hopefully football final will be better.
@sean de paore: so ur comparing the game of hurling to football????
@sean de paore: tis only poor when ya donโt win ehโฆ
Find it both scary and encouraging as a limerick fan that they can score 1-24 without even getting out of second gear, hitting 17 wides. Weโll need to be at full tilt come championship time if weโre gonna make it out of Munster but fair play to them, another trophy in the cabinet. Make hay when the sun shines as they say.
A Sunday stole. Well done Limerick
Well done Limerick Team
You are a credit to Limerick
Now letโs focus on the All Ireland!
@Dermot OโReilly: focus on 19th May
@Dermot OโReilly: small matter of trying to navigate through the Munster championship first! Anybody thinking itโs a given that weโll sail through arenโt tuned in. Itโll be a major scrap to achieve top 3 finish, give me 3rd now and Iโd be delighted.
Gillane even with so many chances wasted, is the best forward in the country right now
