AN APPLICATION FOR planning permission for the redevelopment of the RDS Angelsea Stand has been submitted today.
Home of Leinster Rugby, the €26 million makeover will improve facilities at the ground and increase the capacity from 18,500 to 21,000, according to a statement released this afternoon.
That is 4,000 less than the original figure of 25,000 quoted when details were unveiled back in January 2015.
Grimshaw/Newenham Mulligan Architects is the consortium that won the international the design competition, and it has been working alongside the RDS, Leinster and the Dublin Horse Show “to develop the detail of the initial design concept” for the Main Arena.
Work had been expected to begin in April 2016 at the earliest.
“Designing a stadium to meet the unique design requirements of the RDS Main Arena is a complex and challenging task,” said Michael Duffy, CEO of the RDS.
We have today submitted a planning application for a redeveloped Anglesea Stand which will create a top class experience for visitors and positively impact on the Dublin Horse Show, Leinster Rugby and any other events held in the Main Arena.”
Mick Dawson, CEO of Leinster Rugby added: “This has taken a huge amount of work from all concerned and the RDS have gone about it the right way.
“It is great to be able to take that next step. It is welcome news for all involved with Leinster Rugby but in particular for our season ticket holders who continue to support us in great numbers but are eager to see how this all develops.
“I think this is a very positive step as we look towards developing the RDS Arena into the best in class offering that we all know it can be.”

Love watching him @ lightweight. However I still actually think Duffy would have beaten him if their fight had gone five rounds.
May as well dream there as in bed I suppose
He has been a completely different fighter since he moved up a division.
