Former Ireland midfielder Lee Carsley gets axed by Blades

The 40-times capped international’s CV will suffer from his three-month stint up north.

LEE CARSLEY’S SECOND stint in coaching has lasted three months and 10 games. The former Ireland midfielder has been “relieved” from his role as David Weir’s assistant coach at Sheffield United.

The news is not much better for Weir, who was also sacked by the League One side after a disastrous start to the season. United have won just one game, drawing two and losing seven, and lie 22nd in the league.

Weir and Carsley, teammates at Everton until their recent retirements, won their first league game in charge but struggled to impose their new gameplan as the Blades scored just six goals in their 10 outings.

Carsley made a name for himself as a combative centre-midfielder with Derby and then Everton. He appeared 40 times for Ireland, between 1999 and 2008, and travelled to the 2002 World Cup with the Boys in Green. He was an assistant coach with the Coventry first team last season.

A statement, released by United, revealed that they aim to appoint a new management team on a permanent basis as quickly as possible

Chief executive Julian Winter said, ”First and foremost all at Sheffield United… wish David and Lee all the best for the future. None of us wanted to be in this position at this point in the season. David’s appointment was made as part of developing a new phase at the club.

“Chris Morgan has been asked and agreed to take an interim role in charge of Sunday’s team. He knows the players and will be doing his utmost to get a return to winning ways.”

Morgan said: “The club have made me aware of the situation and I am happy to step in and work with the players for the Coventry game.”

The club will be making no further statement until the appointment of a new manager. The early favourite to take over from Weir, however is former Derby boss Nigel Clough.

Pogba is at a stage where he doesn’t really care. He is on crazy money and his reputation after winning the world cup is an all time high. Maybe not witj fans but for Barcelona, real Madrid and psg boards he’s still worth 100 million. He could feasibly play poorly for years and swap between top clubs and earn the same money.

@Murf T Will: Yeah – with United. Then he moved to Everton didn’t he? It’s not like he’s been bouncing around the top clubs whilst playing poorly on the strength of his good reputation as you claim Pogba might.

@Hugh Jass: I see your point but Chelsea to Athletico was a huge drop in standard for Torres! Do you not remember how good he was at Liverpool? He’s lucky there was so much love for him at AM or he’d have been thrown into mid-table obscurity.

@Murf T Will: And as soon as it was time to move clubs where did he go? Everton then Galaxy. Your original claim was that Pogba can play poorly for years and still secure high profile moves to the likes of Barca and Real Madrid. That’s clearly not the case.

Hammers well worth their 2-0 lead. So much negativity surrounding the club ,players and manager. Score line doesn’t surprise me.In saying that I think it’s Woodward that needs to take a step back and let someone else take the reigns. He is a very astute businessman but not a Chief Executive.

Give Smalling and Shaw a pay rise! 4 million a year is nowhere near enough for this level of mediocre, overhyped talent. This is what I spend my hard earned barstooler euro on, so you better sort it Woodward!… Sure, it’s the best league in the world!
