'What happens on the field stays on the field' - Donaghy downplays McMahon incident

The Kerry forward insists there’s no ill-feeling towards Philly McMahon.

KIERAN DONAGHY HAS downplayed the seriousness of the off-the-ball incident involving him and Philly McMahon during Sunday’s All-Ireland final.

McMahon has been accused of foul play after TV replays appeared to show the Dublin defender putting his fingers into Donaghy’s eyes.

The incident has threatened to overshadow Dublin’s 25th title celebrations with McMahon forced to field questions at the team’s celebrations last night.

But Donaghy revealed he won’t be looking for any punishment to be handed down to McMahon and there’s no ill-feeling towards the corner-back.

Speaking to RTÉ Sport this afternoon, Donaghy said: ”What happens on the field stays on the field and that’s the way I’ve always played it.”

“An All-Ireland final is a one-off game and whatever happens I’d leave it at that. I wouldn’t be carrying anything into next year.”

Eamonn Fitzmaurice confirmed to stay as Kerry boss next year

I don’t agree with this, but Donaghy is saying what anyone would say when asked about it,no one wants to be seen to land another player in it.

Fair play to donaghy. Always strikes me as a sound fella. I’d imagine the gaa won’t take the same view though. In fairness McMahon comes across as a decent man too in any interviews I’ve seen and read. When he enters that field though he’s capable of anything. Shame that he acts the maggot. He should be talked about as being dublins player of the year not this stuff that’s starting to follow him around

McMahon should still be banned. I wonder if Donaghy means more in the sense that he doesn’t take it personally and won’t hold any grudges.

It’s not for Donaghy to decide on all fairness. The game is the victim in this case not Ciaran Donaghy.

I wouldn’t say that. It was his eye after all.

fair play to him.say he’s gutted after being the losing captain as well, could be his last year as I’d say, there was a comment made on the Sunday game last night as well about they changing there minds on the man of the match,I thought McMahon was the best player on the field, have a hunch he was the one they were talking about, you cant give it to a guy that does that.
