Hend wins Hong Kong Open, as Ireland's Kevin Phelan finishes third

The Australian beat Angelo Que in a playoff to win the $1.3 million prize.

AUSTRALIAโ€™S SCOTT HEND won the $1.3 million Hong Kong Open on Sunday, overcoming a valiant effort by Filipino Angelo Que in a playoff for the biggest title of Hendโ€™s career to date, as Irelandโ€™s Kevin Phelan came in third at 11 under.

The 41-year-old Hend held his nerve on the first extra hole, sinking a five-footer for par and his first European Tour victory as Que could only manage a bogey.

Hend, who has five Asian Tour wins to his name, collected a winnerโ€™s cheque of $216,660 and will now head to nearby Macau where he is defending the title he won there last year.

It was a dramatic day at the top of the leaderboard at the Hong Kong Golf Club, with a host of players tightly bunched together and all with a chance of winning in the southern Chinese city.

Que, playing a yellow ball, dramatically tied with Hend on 13-under after a sensational shot from the rough, round the trees, led to a birdie on the eighteenth.

It looked like Que was going to become the Philippinesโ€™ first winner on the European Tour when Hend dumped his approach shot to the final hole into the bunker.

But the big-hitting Australian got up and down to force the playoff on the par-four eighteenth, where Que fluffed a chip, costing him a historic title and leaving Hend with a short putt to win.

โ€œFinally at the age of 41 Iโ€™ve won a European Tour event. Itโ€™s very special,โ€ said Hend.

โ€œI live to play golf and this is what itโ€™s all about. This is what makes it worthwhileโ€

โ€œIโ€™m good mates with Angelo and I feel bad for him making the bogey the way he did. Of course we want to win but you donโ€™t want to see your competitor make a mistake for you to win.

โ€œBut Iโ€™ll take the win and treasure it,โ€ he added.

Que, dressed in lime-green trousers and a bright orange shirt, said the iron from the rough on his final hole of regulation play was the โ€œshot of my careerโ€.

โ€œComing in this week my goal was to finish top ten, top five, so second is way better,โ€ he told reporters.

Shocker of a decision. GGG by four rounds. Feel bad for the guy. Heโ€™s been avoided throughout his career and when a huge fight comes around (which Canelo avoided several times) he gets done out of the decision by an incompetent or corrupt judge.

Crazy difference in scoring. I thought GGG won it at the time but I could see it being a draw too.

All of canelo fight have one ridiculous scorecard from a judge, trout, Lara and cotto all had judges giving canelo 9 or 10 rounds when they were clearly close fights trout fight even had open scoring which made no sense to use, Lara fight he should have lost, the draw score against mayweather even when he koโ€™d khan one judge had him 4-1 up at the time even though khan was clearly winning until that point. It cannot be a coincidence that every fight he has that goes to judges has atleast one giving him 8-10 rounds when the fight clearly does not reflect such scores
