Kerry 2-14
Mayo 2-14
Fintan OโToole reports from Croke Park
PADDY DURCAN PROVED Mayoโs hero as his injury-time point salvaged a draw against Kerry in Croke Park today and ensured a replay will be required for this All-Ireland semi-final tie.
Kerry had one late chance to win it but Bryan Sheehanโs tricky long-range free from distance dropped short and Mayo cleared their lines before the final whistle sounded soon after.
Mayoโs marathon summer continues after a game where they netted twice in the first half courtesy of Andy Moran in the 4th minute and Colm Boyle in the 19th minute.
Kerryโs defence was prised apart regularly in the opening stages with Moran finishing superbly to the net in front of Hill 16 while Boyle scythed through for their second goal.
Mayo nearly bagged a third goal in the 23rd minute but Moran and Cillian OโConnor were denied as the ball bounced around the Kerry goalmouth before Moranโs shot was deflected over the bar.
But Kerry were level at the break, 2-5 to 1-8, with Stephen OโBrien raising their green flag in the 13th minute after being released into space by Kieran Donaghy. They reeled Mayo in during the closing stages of the first half as Paul Geaney and James OโDonoghue picked off points from frees.
Geaney landed the opening point of the second half but then Mayo began to play at an increased tempo with Moran, Donal Vaughan, OโConnor and Tom Parsons notching the points that pushed them three clear.
But then Kerry pounced for their second goal in the 45th minute. David Clarke produced a splendid save to deny David Moran yet Kerryโs captain Johnny Buckley rushed in to net the rebound.
That score brought the teams level at 2-9 apiece and the action ebbed and flowed from there until the final whistle. The teams were level on five further occasions with Kerry going in front four times and Mayo ahead just the once after Cillian OโConnorโs 61st minute point.
Barry John Keane swivelled onto his left to bring Kerry level before Paul Murphy looked to have grabbed a priceless winning point for Kerry in the 69th minute.
But Mayo finally found their range in injury-time through Durcan and ensured round two will take place next Saturday afternoon.
Scorers for Kerry: Paul Geaney 0-7 (0-4f), Johnny Buckley, Stephen OโBrien 1-0 each, James OโDonoghue 0-3 (0-2f), Killian Young, Paul Murphy, Kieran Donaghy, Barry John Keane 0-1 each.
Scorers for Mayo: Andy Moran 1-5, Cillian OโConnor 0-4 (0-1f), Colm Boyle 1-0, Tom Parsons 0-2, Donal Vaughan, Jason Doherty, Paddy Durcan 0-1 each.

Two great sides. Canโt wait for next Sunday.
@Fox: Saturday, Iโll see ya up there for a drink!!
@Fox: Ah yes next Sundayโฆ When two far better sides meet. That was full of errors etc it was terrible standard just griping as so tight.
@Brown Boots: poor weather and fierce intensity, how you could expect it to be error free ?
@Malachy Rivers: Yo do realise that Fox is probably a dude with a girlโs profile pic! what would a young woman be doing on here commenting with ye old farts.
@Brown Boots: are you sober ??? Did you see the conditions out there,,, Herculean effort from two great warriors of the game. Hats off to all on that field
@Harry Corry: poor weather and fierce intensity, sound like excuses to me. Weather perhaps a few slips etc. Was it responsible for all the poor defending and shoddy dragging about for frees I donโt think so. If players at this level canโt handle intensity then itโs probably not the team which will win an all Ireland then eh. So you point has nothing to do with what I said. Seems youโre a bit narky today โArry.
@Brown Boots: Snooze. Try harder Trolly McTrollface
@Brian Fitzgerald: I once saw two drunks fight on the street, they gave great effort too and people couldnโt take their eyes off it, but it was nothing to do with the standard of fighting. Same here.
@Jon Snow: oh sorry if you think speaking the truth about the amount of fouls and errors is upsetting for you. Perhaps from Mayo and realise itโs another year gone now your chance may have passed. Or Kerry person who is afraid that perhaps this team is nowhere near the legendary teams of old. Youโre just on the defensive rather than me trolling. I made my case in previous comments as to why it was a terrible game, notwithstanding both teams will to win and excitement of a close game. Other than that it was terrible.
@Malachy Rivers: waiting for her reply
What does the Fox say?
@Brown Boots: muppet
@Donal O Cofaigh: some people are very easily offended this eveningโฆ Well if it makes you all feel better I have a money saving tip, donโt bother going to Dublin again this year as the winners of the all Ireland will be from next Sundayโs game not Saturdays.
@Fox: ref made alot of poor decisions. In my view he spoiled what could have been a very free flowing game. A draw was fair in the end.
@Fox: only came back to this now, Jesus.
Funny mayo fans giving out about roscommon fans booing Moran last time, mayo booed literally every decision against them today and booed Kerry frees. Yes some were dubious but deegan was poor to both sides! He was mad for a draw
@Yorkie1892: mayo fans are a joke
@Yorkie1892: Every group of fans boos repeated poor refereeing decisions. There were very soft frees today on both sides โ but I would say most going Kerryโs way. Regarding Andy Moran, youโre leaving out the historical and local context. They were booing Moran (who plays for Mayo) just because he doesnโt play for Roscommon โ itโs pathetic! Ballaghaderreen (where Moran is from) is an anomaly in the GAA โ geographically Ballaghaderreen is in Roscommon but comes under the Mayo GAA county bord for historical reasons.
@Seรกn OโSullivan: Youโre a real charmer OโSullivan! ; )
Mayo trying to set records for most games / minutes played instead of winning all Irelands.
Nothing silences Croke Park like the final whistle in a drawn game.
@Larry Doyle: it was like following a funeral walking up Clonniff Road after last yearโs All Ireland.
I donโt like this replay business after a draw.. Just play extra time. Hoping for a Tyrone vs Mayo final and Tyrone to lift it
@Acedeuce: ah but you have to think of the gaa. They Canโt make extra money then
@Yorkie1892: do you not think both teams deserve another game out of this?
@Yorkie1892: If the GAA just wanted the money from replays then why did they scrap relays for the earlier rounds?
And why shouldnโt they want money anyway? How else are they supposed to run the organisation?
@Acedeuce: 15/2 odds for that one bro
This forum has simply turned into a slagging match from keyboard warriors who should show respect to two top teams.calling these athletes bottlers is a joke. If anything mayo are the most resilient team ever, they may never get over the line but by god they give everything they have.
@Tony Boyle: Well said Tony
@Harry Corry: totally agree there-even if they never win an All Ireland this mayo team never fail to entertain
@Tony Boyle: bottlers plain and simple. 3 points ahead and within 60 secs 1 down. What would Dublin or Tyrone do in that situation? Bottlers plain and simple havenโt the balls to finish the job.
Whatโs up with the sports braโs??
@mccumhail: GPS trackers
@Ciara Baines: also heart monitors
Donaghy Outstanding again. Crazy to take him Off. Andy Moran deserves an All-Ireland though
@Buff Egan: donโt forget jack Barry buff. he changed the game
@Buff Egan: both gave tantalising displays today buff. And you can believe that
@Buff Egan: You get what you deserve especially when your from Mayo
Fantastic battle to be runners up, kerry will lash them out of it next week
@Scott Crossfield: You donโt know much about football if you think Mayo will get lashed out of it. Stupid comment.
@Harry Corry: see you here next week so
@Scott Crossfield: No problem.
@Scott Crossfield: Let me guess, Dublin sunshine supporter ?
@Harry Corry: no just sport in general. When teams donโt take chances to kill off a strong opponent ie finish kerry off, kerry will not give them a second chance. You seem to think no other opinions are allowed calling ones opinion a stupid comment, and a last ditch reference to sunshine support. So go back to your safe place and keep your keyboard warrior antics for another day
@Scott Crossfield: That would be true if Kerry were a better side than Mayo but I donโt think thatโs he case. Very evenly matched
@Jon Snow: really event matched but weather was a help and how often would you see back to back poor games from Kerry, thatโs Mayos best is stages. Personally would love to see Mayo the bottle to kick on but today was a day to show it.
@Scott Crossfield: keyboard warrior ? Get a life. Ok, you seem to think Mayo will get lashed out of it the next day. Based on what ??? Kerryโs defence has been poor all year, will that change ??? Mayo defence is very hard to break down, will that change ??? I donโt think so. I can guarantee neither team will be lashed out of it the next day.
@Harry Corry: jog on, c u next time x x
A very poor ref, did his best to spoil a very good game.
@Rochelle: Spot on. No allowance for the conditions & ridiculous yellow cards.
@Rochelle and Willie the Kid, both of ye are spot on? Sick looking at Deegan being very poor in Laois for years now! Donโt know how Croke Park still use him for big games! Or any game for that matter!
@Willie the kid: Itโs up to the players to adapt to the conditions, not the ref.
Same old Mayo, played better and still couldnโt finish the job. Kerry should get the job done next week
Love Kerry football,but Dublin would eat either team
Mayo will HAMMER kerry next Saturday.
@Alison Maguire: and then Tyrone will win them in the final
@Acedeuce: no. Mayo will beat Kerry and then they will beat Tyrone
This is all fantastic banter :-/
Andy moran for MOM hands down
340/350 hand passes & 50/60 frees & this is being called a great game. I do wonder about football at times. So much more potential surely.
Mayoโs chance gone again i think.I have said it before Kerry are an average team but will they ever be as poor again is the question?.This game was their for the taking at different stages for both teams but Mayo almost looked afraid to go for it especially in the last ten mins.Kerry will blitz them in the first ten or fiftheen like mayo did to the Rossies.
@John Carroll: Mayo got the psychologically important equalising score. Kerry went ahead in the final moments but couldnโt close the deal.
@A Pop Fanโs Dream: Iโm sorry but thatโs just bs. We heard the same last year in the All-Ireland final about how well Mayo had played yet it was them needing to kick an equalising free in the 7th minute of injury time to get a draw. Replay didnโt work out to well for them then and unfortunately I canโt see it going any better next week.
Dubs have nothin to fear
@43 major trophies: ignorance is bliss..
Itโs too late in the championship for replays. There should be extra time. Supporters asked to travel again, players to go again in 6 days. Ridiculous
Kerryโs full back line were all over the place strange when Ronan Shanahan played all the national league games and made the team of the league and he canโt get a place on the panel now
For all the claims about hoodoos etc today the boys of Mayo did their families friends and especially their County Proud well done win loose or draw next Saturday For the first time this year two teams played Gaelic Football NOT Basketball
Thank you Mayo and Kerry The same again next week
@pat seery: Excellent game and Mayo will forever do their county proud. Still bottlers tough
Kerry will be happy with that, played at only 70% and still could have won it, there first competitive game in the championship so will improve big time for next saturday
@DJ Moran: I fear for Mayo. They should have won today. Kerry forward line more clinical. Mayo had poor shot selection. You donโt get second chance against those Kerry hoors.
@Simon Peters:
I love being a Kerry Hoor!
@Simon Peters: kerryโs full back line was very bad today, but they were left badly exposed too, i think the replay will be very close aswell, mayos tackling and intensity is better than kerryโs but 3-4 of kerrys big players were quite today so expect them to deliver next weekend, kerry by 2
Donagh Outstanding again. Crazy to take him Off. Andy Moran deserves an All-Ireland though
@Buff Egan: I preferred your other comment with a Y.
@Brown Boots: a buff your only a hurling man!!
Same old story.. Mayo = Bottlers
@William Flynn: Mayo got the equaliser! Kerry bottled it.
Great game. Mayo should pull it out of the bag next Saturday!!
Where replay on lads
@Eugene Walsh: next Saturday
@Eugene Walsh: Croke park, Saturday
@billy dorney: You love everyone billy just that kinda guy!!!
Surely Kelly the Kerry keeper should have been the man to take that free at the end. Kerry lacking a bit of leadership today maybe
The mayo chip is going to turn into a crater
Why a replay why not play extra time ?
Must be GREED
Kerry are shite and dirt shower
@shane campion: foff Shane
unacker
@shane campion: youโre a classy man yourself
