Kavanagh says McGregor's impending announcement is 'only positive'

The UFC featherweight champion has said he has something significant to reveal after he faces Eddie Alvarez.

CONOR McGREGOR’S FANS should only expect good news when the UFC featherweight champion makes an announcement after his next bout.

That’s according to John Kavanagh, McGregor’s head coach at Straight Blast Gym in Dublin.

McGregor will aim to add the UFC lightweight title to his CV when he takes on defending champion Eddie Alvarez in the main event at UFC 205 at Madison Square Garden in New York on Saturday week [12 November].

After the fight was announced at the end of September, UFC president Dana White revealed that McGregor has “something completely out of left field” to announce once his clash with Alvarez is out of the way. McGregor later added that his announcement is “going to be big”.

Speculation over the nature of what McGregor might reveal has ranged from plans to take a break from the sport to the possibility of retirement. However, in a video interview with The42, Kavanagh insisted that the fighter’s fans shouldn’t be concerned:

I’ve heard him say a few different things and they’re all positive. Whatever way he goes with this, it’s only positive.

“I don’t know what’s going to happen. Look at the last fight. He can say, ‘Let the divisions mature and in six months’ time I’ll see what it’s like’ — and then 24 hours later he’s like, ‘Okay, let’s do a work out’.

“Conor has such a hyperactive mind and a hyperactive body, you’d never know what’s going to happen with him. But for sure it’s a positive announcement. I know people are going to enjoy what he has to say.”

Noel Mooney has been pulling all kinds of PR stunts, straight out of the John Delaney self-preservation book, to try and glam up the old FAI, as certain long-term gravy-train riders try to cling onto control.

@Tony Mcgrath: You’re entitled to your opinion but I’d strongly disagree with you. Brian Kerr is a hugely knowledgeable football man and has his heart firmly in the right place when it comes to the game in this country. He doesn’t engage in PR or BS and he’s one man who I could listen to all day. He’s also highly entertaining. Wish we had more like him.
