A MAN IN his 20s has been arrested after Olympic silver medallist John Joe Nevin suffered a broken leg in an attack this morning.
Nevin, who won the bantamweight silver at the 2012 London Olympics, is recovering in hospital after he was attacked in the Ardleigh area of Mullingar.
Gardaรญ were called to the scene of the dispute outside a house at approximately 11.30am.
Three people, including Nevin, were hospitalised following the incident. The other two injured people โ a man and a woman, both in their 20s โ are believed to have minor injuries.
The man in his 20s was arrested this afternoon and is being held at Mullingar Garda Station.
Gardaรญ have said that enquiries are ongoing and have appealed for anyone with information to contact them.
In a statement issued this evening, Nevinโs promoters GreenBlood Boxing confirmed that the boxer was injured while โattempting to act as a peacemakerโ in a family dispute when he was attacked.
The injury โ confirmed as a double leg break โ is expected to keep the 24-year old out of the ring for between two and three months.
โOur schedule has been thrown off by a few months but hopefully weโll have John Joe back working hard by mid-summer and have him fighting again stateside in September,โ Tom Moran of GreenBlood said.
โJohn Joe is okay and hopefully the Garda will take care of the matter now. We were hoping to get John Joe headlining a card in Ireland in the fall but we may have to push that back some now because the big push is making him a major attraction in the Irish American audience. We have talks about New York, Boston and Philadelphia fights so weโll keep working on it.โ

Ainโt looking good for the Dubs. โฆ
Christ thatโs embarrassing
Hon galway!
Dont seem to play well outside the pale.
Galway have the ability to do this to anyone on any day
Lets hope its not a one off they dont get carried away.. Like previous campaigns. Here come Galway!
Canning is class
Joe only showed up when young mannion had won them the match easy be immense when the game is won
Galway are out of sight at this stage.
Galway scoring like Tipp and tackling like Killkenny. Need to do it on a regular basis though
Starting the best centre back in the game in the forwards is nonsense, and keaney is a great ball winner is started in the backs! Madness.
Galway hurlers are a dirty bunch.
Ref is soft.
Dub hurlers are soft.
No denying a fine performance by Galway.
Third week in a row itโs been a poor performance by the ref. No advantage rule in any of the games and some of the decisions very questionable.
Sounds like sour Dub grapes to me. Tastes lovely.
If Galway had scored 4 goals less it would have been a draw. Exciting stuff.
Awful day for dubs but reality is there was just 5 score in itโฆjust unfortunate that 4 of them were goalsโฆ Long road thru qualifiers now
Hon Caltra
Fair play to Galway . Good hard win but if Kilkenny had won that today like Galway did there would be uproar and lads calling for Brian Galvins head. Seems he only supposed to let Kilkenny away with tough performances like that. Itโs hurling after all not some soft sort of game for the Olympics
Dubs never donโt up but good luck to Galway
Donโt no what Brennan and Mulcahy were looking at, I thought there was a great crowd in Tullamore this evening!
