'I suppose we tried to hide the cups' - John Evans believes success has hindered his players

Roscommon were shocked by Sligo at the weekend.

ROSCOMMON MANAGER JOHN Evans believes that his players were hindered by the success enjoyed by his team earlier in the year.

The Division Two league champions were shocked by the Yeats men in Markiveicz Park on Saturday evening when they crashed to a four point defeat in the first provincial shock of the year.

Evans said in an interview with the Roscommon Herald that the success of winning both the FBD League and the Division Two title got to his players and they began to believe the hype that was surrounding them in the build-up.

“Sligo were by far the hungrier team, there’s no doubt about that. As I said to our own lads in the dressingroom, we tried to hide the fact that we had two cups (FBD League and Division Two league) in the bag,” said Evans.

“I suppose we tried to hide the cups and the bag to soften the blow. We were put up on a bit of a mantle to be taken down. But full credit to Sligo, they had us in all departments. The big factor was their hunger. They hadn’t been fed in a long, long time.”

Evans admitted that the management team did actually hide the trophies they won earlier in the year in a bag to try and keep the player’s mind’s off their own success.

It does get through to the players. What do you do when you have success? You win a couple of finals and a couple of trophies, and it puts you up on a pedestal. You try to mind the players from that.

“We did actually put the cups away. We put them into a bag and we didn’t go near them but that still doesn’t give you the cutting edge.”

Cavan await the Rossies in the qualifiers in a repeat of last year’s clash in which Roscommon won comfortably.

Evans can’t have it both ways. Saying they were trying hide the cups (I mean counting the FBD is daft) while at the same time talking about winning All-Ireland’s.

The more I hear out of this lad the funnier he gets. An FBD and a division 2?

Ah yes, the dangerous hype that surrounds the FBD and D2 champions, impossible to contain. Hiding the trophies in a bag didn’t even work!

This guy is a joke. He has been banging on about the FBD League and Div 2 like the are something of note. He inherited a county full of class underage players and some solid senior ones yet he hasn’t managed a championship of serious note. He loves the sound of his own voice and buzzes off getting in any paper that will have him. Had no time for he before the Sligo game and even less now.

Too much talk can be a hindrance especially at the start of the championship. There’s plenty of my fellow mayomen and women who do enough talking every year before a ball is kicked that I don’t think it has an affect. In Mayo case it’s later on in the year after quarters and semi finals that it really becomes a detriment

Love how everyone keeps going on about what a massive shock it was. There’s never been more than a few points between Sligo an Roscommon in the Connacht Championship for years. Bookies got it massively wrong offering 3 and 4 to 1 on Sligo.

John Evans is a bulls…ter . He made a bit of progress with Tipp., and I mean a Bit. He fooled around Pairc Tailteann for a while with McEneany, another clown. Now he is talking bull in Roscommon. Cake Curran is perfectly right, a good man to talk himself up. Why does he not look for a job with his native Kerry? I think I know the answer.
