CORK CITY BOSS John Caulfield has expressed disappointment at confirmation that Sean Maguire will leave the club to join Preston in July, while wishing the player all the best on his move.
With 16 goals so far in the league this season, the 23-year-old has been a key part of the Cork City side that currently tops the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division.
Maguire hit a hat-trick in front of Ireland boss Martin OโNeill and assistant Roy Keane in a 3-0 victory over Dundalk at Oriel Park, as the Leesiders went 18 points clear of the reigning champions.
And today, after news of the Preston move was confirmed, Caulfield told Red FM that talks had been ongoing for a while and that the main issue of contention between the two sides was when the player would leave for England.
Ultimately, July was decided upon, meaning Maguire can continue to play in Cork colours until then.
We wanted to keep him as long as we could. They wanted him as quick as they could (get him),โ Caulfield said.
โIt would have been great to keep him until the end of the season but that wasnโt going to happen.
The most important thing for him is that he has kept his feet on the ground (while playing for Cork).
โWe just have to drive on for the remainder of the season.
There were a number of (British) clubs that released the money clause.
โIt was up to us to negotiate and get certain things in our favour
No club wanted to leave it until the end of the (League of Ireland) season. We wanted to get the best deal for us.โ
While expressing faith in alternative options up front in Achille Campion and Connor Ellis, Caulfield added that Cork would be โin the marketโ looking for another striker of the requisite quality.
The Rebelsโ manager also expressed hope that defender Ryan Delaney would extend his stay at the club, with his loan spell set to expire in the coming weeks, after he joined from Burton Albion in January.
I was hoping we can get that finalised but weโll look at alternatives if we canโt,โ he said.
The 52-year-old coach, meanwhile, paid tribute to his side after they extended their lead at the top in convincing fashion last night.
โThereโs an unbelievable drive and spirit within them,โ he added.
How they eat and look after themselves, thatโs what people donโt see. And Seaniโs part of that.
โWhen he came back this year, after 30 goals last year, he went to a higher level again.
โSeaniโs going to have a fantastic career, Iโve no doubt about that.โ

Fine player and was guaranteed choice for team of the year. Hereโs hoping to more like him coming through
@Shaun Gallagher: sure Porter is not far off him as it is. He would certainly have been fighting it out for a starting berth on the Lions team if it wasnโt for his injury
Over the years tight head props were at least perceived as being slower and less skilful than loose heads. A few years ago before he hit the interprovincial and international stage I asked him if he ever considered switching to loose. He looked at me like I had 2 heads. But after I explained that with his speed and skills he might get more freedom and be on the ball more often at loose he didnโt knock me off my barstool. He said that he would be sticking with tight but would show that modern No 3s
could have all the skills and still anchor the scrum. How right he was. He has set the standard for tight heads worldwide. Brilliant rugby player.
@JG: this is a bit like the Michael Owen BBC sports personality of the year tweet!
Wonderful player great watching him play long may he last
I wonder is he better than Peter Clohessy was?
Just curious but he is one hell of a player
@OโBrien Michael: Claw was a legend but he was a penalty machine. Also, Furlong has broken the mold with his handling and footwork. That simply didnโt exist for props 15 years back.
@Steve OโFarrell: thats a fair comment old chap
A super player, why wouldnโt he amd his mother a Cork woman, but he tries (pun) to keep that quiet.
Great article, and a super player .letโs hope he stays injury free for the next World Cup . Well need all his skills to table for that .
Not only is he the best tighthead in the world at the moment, he is arguably the greatest tighthead prop there has ever been.
