ON HIS FOURTH visit to All-Ireland SHC final day, Joe Canning has finally annexed a Celtic Cross.
Since bursting onto the scene as an 18-year-old in 2008, the Portumna ace swept all before him with club and county. The Liam MacCarthy Cup was the only trophy that eluded him during an illustrious career to date. Not any more.
After today, he will no longer figure in teams of the ‘greatest hurlers never to win an All-Ireland.’ Galway are All-Ireland champions for the first time in 29 years and Canning finally has his medal.
His 10-point haul helped the Tribesmen past Waterford today, and the 28-year-old remained humble in victory.
He watched his captain David Burke lift the trophy while standing side by side with the grieving Keady family in what must have been a difficult day for them.
Canning then spent some time with young supporters before he returned to the dressing room.

Class from canning , hes the 1 player iv always wanted to win an all ireland. Hes been class since he came onto the big stage and always comes back stronger then ever. Had a quiet second half by his standards
Looked injured in fairness
Was half hoping Waterford would win and really they had their chances but who would deny Galway’s Joe Canning his success today he has endured many a bad day so cheers Joe andGalway on their double
Don’t think anyone could begrudge Galway and Canning. So much recent hurt but both keep coming back hungrier every year. Well deserved from a Limerick man. Hopefully Mayo can end their suffering now next, after we hopefully nick an under 21 all Ireland.
Legend Canning – an exemplar for others to look up to in hurling. Captain Burke’s speech was excellent also. Cracking game today!
Has there ever been a greater ambassador for the game. As much class off the field as on it.
What a great gesture ….a day those boys won’t forget …well done Joe
Cork supporter but couldn’t be happier for this man, a true great and a class act. Really tough on Waterford but they can’t put an asterisk after Joe’s name any more. Lovely gesture, and I hope he doesn’t get the brainless criticism aimed at Aidan O’Shea for being decent to young supporters. Maith fear, Joe.
The cannings will clean up at the ploughing championships selling hurlers after this ‘
